I just plugged in my iPod to my comp b/c I was about to add a new song to it. AutoSync was turned off, and then the next thing I know, all my songs and movies are erased. I thought it was just a display problem, but when I looked on my iPod there were no songs or movies, just those two b/c my photos were still on. The songs and movies show up as "Other" in the main screen, can I still get my songs back?

If they are still on your computer you can. Just resync it.

I had a similar issue. Now on my ipod screen is shows a folder with an exclamation point. I looked it up and it means that it needs to be reformatted and reset. Well when I try to do it I get an error and thats it. Ive tried going to a mac store but they said you need an appt and I havent had time to schedule one yet.

Just hit Sync. I'm almost sure you have a Touch. Happens to me often too, but don't let it get to you.

I have a mini. Computer recognizes it, the latest itunes says it needs to be reformatted, which is fine, but then gives me an error.

That's why. If you plug the iPod in, and the songs aren't on your computer, it wipes them off of the iPod.

It's kinda hard to explain, here's a timeline:
    -Comp reset
-Used program to get songs from friend's iPod
    -Added friend's songs to iPod
    -Charged iPod about 4 times
-(Today)I plug in my iPod and all the songs are gone

AutoSync wasn't on, and even if it were, my friend's songs would still be on there. The files are still on my iPod, but it's listed as "Other"

Yeah your songs should still be in order on Itunes program, just re sync it and it should be fine.

I don't think it will be, I have about 210 on my iPod but only 50 on iTunes, if I sync it won't it erase the other 160?

OK, odd question time. Has it been dropped? That can play havoc with the HD in an iPod by dislodging the ribbon cable that connects it. There is a way to get into a Mini and correct it, but I can't remember what it is.

No, I'm pretty sure it hasn't. Also, it has been in a case for a long time, so I feel it's been pretty protected. It seems like it needs to be updated, but I tried the ipod updater for windows and it keeps saying I need to reformat.

One thing I do to get around this problem with my 2nd gen Nano is not to enable AutoSync but to manually manage my music.

When I get a new iPod, I take the old one and drag over all of the existing playlists to the computer. Once I've setup the new iPod, I drag those playlists over to it. I did this when I upgraded from a 1st gen Nano to my 2nd gen one.

That's what I've done with all three of my iPods

It just came out of the blue, the iPod's up to date. When I plug it into the computer, the little lightning bolt on the battery is gone from the HUD on iTunes

    ahahahaha. fucking itunes.

sync wipe happened to me. once. i use 2 terminals with mine; one at office one at home. make sure you have manually manage music switched on before you connect your ipod. thats the obvious bit. the other is, press ctrl shift (which is the equiv. of apple/home on the mac) when you plug it in as a cautionary measure. look up preventing sync wipe on the net.

    fucking itunes. ahahaha.

I have always had AutoSync off. Doesn't even make sense to me to have it on

I'd go with the first one. Then go get yourself a real MP3 player. A Creative Zen.
