What do you think are the best VG soundtracks.

Halo is the best, hands down.

    No exceptions(IMHO).

Lots of good ones out there. I don't have a favorite, but Sonic Heroes' Frog Forest, the second Tallon Overworld theme from Metroid Prime, and Klaymen Shuffle from the Neverhood pop to mind.

The Uncharted series has always had magnificent scores done by Greg Edmonson. Also, the two Batman games have had really good scores.

I'm kinda old school so right away I gotta say some of the nes Megaman games had some sick beats. Also Killer Instinct comes to mind.

Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X, and my personal favorite, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind all come to mind.

    100% agree.

A lot of cinematic games like Uncharted may have some high quality orchestrated work, but at least after playing the first two, there isn't a melody that's stuck with me or made me say "I have to get this soundtrack". I think that's what makes a good soundtrack. Final Fantasy 1-10 had a ton of memorable tracks, along with other older Square RPGs. Any track in Symphony of the Night I can simply recite back in my head, and each track fit the location. I really do like SOME of Halo's tracks, but there's really only a couple of stand out tunes.

I like game soundtracks that have music that plays that fits the situations you're in and atmosphere, there are plenty of games that have excellent music, but some just doesnt feel like it matches...

such as, and I know I'll probably get flamed for this, the Ace Combat series, nice tunes I guess, but doesn't fit the air combat.

Anywho, I really dig the music from Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.

There is also some awesome, and creepy tunes for Freespace 2, like this one!

Oh oh oh oh oh oh, and the music for MechWarrior 2 back in the day was swwwweeeettt.

I could post more but I have to sit down and think about it.

I dug the Persona 4 soundtrack a lot. Some of the guitar riffs in the music from the boss fights are pretty cool. Silent Hill also has some great music, and I thought the Mass Effect series has some pretty good stuff as well.

Slightly off subject, but Ive been running a tabletop RPG of Heavy Gear (realistic mech combat Pen and Paper game) and I want some good tunes to play when combat breaks out. Nothing too "epic" but something that fits good for like small skirmishes. I do have the Heavy Gear sound track from the 2 games that were released for it, but trying to broaden my options.

    Any suggestions?

Most Sonic the Hedgehog games seem to always succeed in music, with the exception of Sonic R (Racers) and Megaman games always succeed as well.
