I've never really delved into the Genesis library. Please recommend the best of the best of these categories:

    Action/adventure (Zelda-type or otherwise)
    RPGs
    Strategy

Don't bother recommending platformers, sports, or racing games - I don't care for those.

i was going to mention Greendog because it stars Twin Twist but you don't like platformers :(

but definitely get comix zone! and streets of rage 3.

Phantasy Star 4 (I would recommend 2, but 2 is extremely challenging and probably only values itself on its nostalgia). Phantasy Star 3 is ok.

Shining Force 1 and 3, Shining in the Darkness.

Zelda-type (Landstalker, and Crusader of Centy, and Beyond Oasis, which is pretty awesome).

    Dune: Battle for Arakis
Herzog Zwie (Way ahead of its time)

    Target: Earth
Castlevania: Bloodlines (Sort of a platformer though.)
Any Streets of Rage game but the fourth one is kinda goofy.

I had no idea what I was playing back in the day.

I knew you were my brother from another mother. Target Earth was the shit, but be careful that you don't recommend a game to Mega Moon that will give him a heart attack.

After seeing a video of the gameplay, I don't think that's going to happen. It looks like a typical platformer to me, honestly.

Crusader of Centy looks pretty good, though.

Target Earth is a shooter. There's really not too much platform. But God Damn it's hard. Hey Mega. check out Herzog Zwie. It's like the early RTS type game, but instead of a mouse pointer, you play a Transformer Robot/Jet that deploys your troops but stays and fights along with them.

And you get them in 720p.

    M.U.S.H.A.
    Castlevania Bloodlines
    The Street of Rage games
    Gunstar Heroes
    Contra Hard Corps

That is all I can think of right now.

I'd second Prowl's comments on Shining Force, but would also say 2 as well.
Shining Force 3 was only released for the Sega Saturn.

Landstalker is also a game I would recommend.
Now that I've been reminded of it, I kinda want to play it again.

Actually, for action RPGs, Treasure made game late in the Genesis' life cycle called "Light Crusader" which was pretty great.

EDIT: I see Twin Twist already mentioned it. But yeah, I played that for the first time only a couple years ago and was pretty surprised I never saw or played it when it was first released.

this, this and this!!! I was going to mention cot, but was having trouble remembering the name. luckily, I was beaten to it. also enjoy:

    landstalker
    beyond oasis
    shining force 1 and 2

now if you have a sega cd, there's basically everything made by working designs:

vay, popful mail, lunar 1 and 2, and some others.

Uh, there are heaps of goodies, but the most memorable for me right now off the top of my head are:

Sonic 2, Wonder Boy In Monster Land (you could save the game!!! Cool!), Robocop vs Terminator, Ristar, Ecco, Flashback & The Terminator.
