Metal and rock are my favorite genre of music. But I'm kinda selective on which bands I listen too. I learned about Kamelot a couple months ago, and have been really digging their last studio album, The Black Halo. I pretty much listen to it fully every second day almost. Epica and Karma, the albums before that are great too, with a select amount of good songs from The Fourth Legacy. Roy Khan does an excellent job on vocals. Its one of the main reasons this is my current favourite band. I usually get tired of listen to an album after two months. But its been about 5 months since I picked up Black Halo, and I've yet to tire from listening to it. I'm really looking forward to their upcoming album, Ghost Opera. :D

It doesn't matter the genre, it doesn't matter the type. The best band ever, hands down, is Sevendust.

    Represent it, bitches.

I'm going with Clutch for this one. They incorporate a wide range of styles into their music, plus they have some of the greatest lyrics ever.

For a close second...Coheed and Cambria. Though I don't know if every song exactly qualifies as metal.

Kamelot and Dream Theater also rule.

So hey, what's a good first album if you want to start on Dream Theater? I was planning on picking up some metal this weekend.

Images and Words is a good first album to pick up, or you could go with Scenes from a Memory. Train of Thought might be good to if you want some headbanging metal.

I just saw Type O Negative at the Palladium in Worcester Mass on Saturday. And while they owned with their 20 minute Chicken Dance Polka intro, and cover of Magical Mystery Tour, I would say they are in no way whatsoever prog-metal. They are psyche-goth-metal with heavy Brooklyn Garbageman influences.

The sound sucked as it always does with Petey and the boys live, but the show itself was quite amusing. At one point the big man himself says " Yeah, I know we's suck, but we get payed for it. You all's suck for free!"

How can you not love that?

Whenever the word metal is included in a music discussion, prepare for a debate on to which form of metal certain bands fall under.

Let's not forget Petrucci/Portnoy's side project, Liquid Tension Experiment, which is equaly filled with essential prog rock nutrients for healthy rockers!

    *EDIT*

And for the record, Dream Theater has to be one, if not THE most awesome band I've had the pleasure of seeing live!
