So after moving I have been going through my collection deciding what to display and even have a little pile of stuff on ebay right now. Getting rid of things made me think about what I would keep.

What are the Transformers Essentials? What would I keep and sell everything else before parting with? What will I always display? These are not necessarily the most expensive, but as a whole represent the best. Either they were a fantastic toy, they were the first toy in the line, the defining toy in a line or utterly kick ass.

For example I have near every Alternator and Binaltech, but when it comes down to it you don't need a dozen Smokescreen type molds and while the black prime is really expensive the mold is a piece of junk and the takara version had QC issues. :| Looking through my collection I tried to come up with a minimal list for each year / series of what I might put as best of the best. I tried to not duplicate the same toy / guy across the year and _tried_ to limit the primes. For example I would rather have masterpiece prime then classics prime, not that classics prime is bad, it is really good, but for such a short list you must be picky)

I never collected beasts so I don't have an opinion on them and only got some movie / Galaxy Force guys who I didn't feel confident picking out those. Same goes for animated as it is pretty new I am not sure what is good v.s. what just came out and I am smitten with (Blurr currently tops my list). So how would you make up your list of Transformers Essentials?

    G1
    - Soundwave (Tapes!)
    - Optimus Prime
    - Megatron
    - Jazz (or one of the Autobot vehicles)
    - Devastator
    - Grimlock
    - JetFire
    - Predaking
    - Hot Rod
    - JumpStarter (You can't sell them, hahah, and he is part of every collection, and the cheapo bot is part of every toy line)

    - Shockwave?
    - Superion (or any one of the combiners)?

    RID
    - Car Brothers & God Fire Convoy (Got many back into Tf's)
    - Brave Maximus (Well this mold in general)
    - Scourge (The father of Prime's now yearly evil repaints)
    - Black God Fire Convoy (Totally kick ass)

    Armada
    - Unicron (Twenty years of waiting)
    - Superlink Starscream (50% for the cartoon story)?
    - Laserbeak?

    Energon
    - Arcee (Finally!)
    - Shockblast?
    - SuperLink Maximus Giftset?

    Galaxy Force
    - Any?

    Binaltech
    - BT-07 Smokescreen (The mold that gave us Alternators)
    - Kiss Rodimus (Hated by fans for Kiss, but then rare and loved)
    - Swindle (Second to Smokescreen in the nice mold category)
    - Shockblast (Smokescreen v2.0)?

    Classics
    - Bumblebee (It took twenty years, but the perfect bumblebee)
    - Astrotrain (What Classics would become & updated triple changer)
    - Mirage (Best posable cheap toy ever)

    BotCon
    - 1994 Breakdown?
    - 2005 Ratchet?
    - 2007 Seekers?

    Masterpiece:
    - Takara Masterpiece Optimus Prime (All hail!)
    - U.S. Masterpiece Starscream (The correct paint scheme for the best Starscream)

    Misc:
    - Lucky Draw Gold Masterpiece Convoy (holy grail of tf's)
    - WST (as a whole)
    - Movie Prime (unique transformation for a prime)?
    - eHobby Astrotrain (1985 catalog here I come!)
    - ? (I know there is probably more here, need to go through boxes)

I found myself in a similar situation when picking what to keep for myself as I was taking auction pics of my collection. Instead of making a list here's what I couldn't live with out:

I'm just a G1er - though I have a bunch of old toys from G1 my main display is limited to the the best version (IMO) of each character so I have -

    MP Prime
    Alt Meister (with reprolabels)
    Alt Silverstreak
    Alt Hound
Alt Grimlock (to be replaced by MP Grimlock)
    Classics Jetfire, Bumblebee, mirage
    Universe Silverbolt, Sunstreaker, sideswipe, prowl
6" Titanium Rodimus and Ultra magnus
    Revoltech Hot rod

    MP Megatron
MP Skywarp (not a fan of getting all the seekers)
Alt Shockblast (I'd like a better version of Shockwave)
    Classics Astrotrain, Ramjet
    Universe Tankor, Onslaught
    Animated Blitzwing
    .
    ....need to get more Decepticons!
