Let's see if we can narrow down the very best and the very worst of the G1 Transformers Toys.

    Rules:

    1. Time frame -> 1984-1987. Let's narrow it down to the time frame where G1 was producing new US episodes.

    2. No weird variants or obscure releases. Hubcap, the non-TV Insecticons, and Mail Away figures are OK. But that's the line. No prototypes that once showed up in Mexico or McDonalds toys. No Zybots, Gobots, etc. No weird promotional toys like something from a gas station, etc. Jetfire is OK, even though it's a Macross/Robotech toy.

    My picks..

Best = Soundwave. Both modes work well. He looks like a robot and a cassette player. He has added play value from his tape minions.

Worst = Ironhide. At least Ratchet got a cool looking lightbar and you could pretend he was an auto repair drone or something. There were no redeeming features of the Ironhide toy. The robot mode was horrific, and even the van mode was gappy.

Best = G1 Outback: Australian. Face. Fitting color scheme. Karate chop action.

Worst = G1 Brawn: Squares for hands. Yellow and Green? No face. Not Australian.

    Best?

I reckon Fort Max, but that's just because he's a double headmaster

    Worst?

    Probably one of the firecons

Firecons were released in 1988. Plus, given that it was the 80s so every toy is going to be a brick anyway, they were intended to be sold at the lowest price point and were built around a cool gimmick, I don't see anything wrong with them. They're detailed well enough and I can't really ask for anything more from the lowest price point.

I suppose Ironhide and Ratchet have to be the worst Transformers toys but that's only because they were never intended to be sentient robot characters when they were designed. They were supposed to be ridden by little men.

Both my favorite and least favorite G1 toys are out of the year range, so I will just second OPs choices. I didn't know nothin' 'bout no Diaclones when I was a kid, so Ironhide was disappointing and confusing as hell.

    Best: Scorponok.

Honourable mentions: Ultra Magnus, Prowl, Soundwave, Scourge, Dead End, Sinnertwin, Sideswipe, Ironhide with third party head.

Worst: Chromedome. Horrible design with an atrocious colour scheme.

Dishonorable mentions: Swindle, Blot, Broadside, Windcharger, Groove, Cyclonus (hate the face), Wheelie, Ravage, Duocons, Blurr

Personally, despite the lack of articulation I loved the Firecons and Throttlebots. Some great face sculpts there. Rollbar just oozed personality.

I only have two. Optimus Prime and Battletrap.

Technically Optimus isn't from 1984, he's the 2008 25th anniversary version but whatever. It's basically the same.

I like both toys tho. Battletrap has a cute gimmick, and Prime is a great toy.

Judging by pics tho, Ironhide and Ratchet look ugly af.

BEST: For me its a tie between Trypticon and Galvatron. Galvatrons articulation was putting the rest of the line into shame.
I also liked the the sound effects and colour. As for Trypticon: Not much to say, he is a walking dinosaur that transforms into a city the size of a baby.

WORST: Probably the Throttlebots. Asside the gimmick there is nothing too appealing to them, except perhaps their altmode looks, but still....IDK.

Best g1 toy? G1 jetfire since he was a straight copy of the valkyrie mold and I consider it the best toy of the 80's regarding the articulation and overall feel. Worst? G1 wheelie. Let him burn in toy hell.

Best is Shockwave - big, imposing, lights and sounds

Worst is Wideload - even for a budget figure he was unimpressive, an orange oblong in bot mode and a vehicle shape in alt. And because of the gimmick no meaningful interaction with the transformation.

    Best= Fortress Maximus

Worst= too many to list. Most of the G1 toys are complete shit by todays standards. If I have to pick only 1 it would have to be Megatron. For being the leader his robot mode was beyond horrible. As a kid I wouldn't accept that abomination as the leader. Soundwave was always my Decepticon leader.

Best: Metroplex. Great city mode with multiple ways to configure it, which works well with the Minibots and combiner limbs of its era all the way up to the Titan Master vehicles on the pegs today.

Worst: Megatron. Ugly, spindly robot that didn't even hold together well when new.

To be fair, the third party clip on heads for Ratchet and Ironhide go a long way towards redeeming them.

The arms are more articulate than a lot of G1 figures and the weapons platforms are a nice extra.
