i mean, damn. this happens so much. dr wu copied a lot of fakebuster's stuff too. i can understand that shapeways texture isnt for everyone, but itd be nice if they offered to buy the design from the original designer.

^^ well said. At least we, as a community are aware, and can choose to support the original designer. I know I will!

This looks great but it would not be cool if stolen.

If that is the case then I will be really happy, not sure I can see it though.

Am I missing something here? A third party rips off a Hasbro IP and we don't bat any eyelid but they rip off another designer and we cry foul?

    That's hardly a valid argument.

If it's stolen it is stolen, regardless of whether it's better or not.

By that logic, if this kit improves on the original then it's fine.

Do you a link to the 'already great kit' you speak of?

Yeah I found it. It seems that they're both 'inspired' by a comic design.

Also let's be serious for a second here.

I own FanToys Soar, MT Quantron and lots of other third party products but I'm not kidding myself by saying they're original.

They're all heavily based or completely based off of designs that exist already.

But we love Quakewave, and Shockwave is owned by a greedy evil corporation that doesn't fulfill our addiction enough. We praise 3rd Party companies like they're Robin Hood.

Eh... the usual 3P antics aren't quite the same as straight KOs. Both Bandai's sentai series and Transformers have given us robotic dinos that turn into robotic humanoids; that concept alone is not sufficiently unique that every single robotic dino is 'ripped off' some primogenitor. Most 3P products move further along that scale, borrowing the ideas and concepts without being straight copies of the original material. As Hyperion is to Superman, so Columpio is to Sludge, right?

Of course, having now seen the cited kit, I don't think Beelzeboss is ripping that off anymore than Columpio is ripping off Sludge. It's a collection add-on pieces for the same toy that adapt it to look like the same alternative design from the same fictional inspiration. To accomplish that, they are, perforce, going to look quite similar, but if you pay attention to the details, it's clear that Beelzeboss's kit is quite distinct from johnbonhamatron's in every particular.

The windows on the chest are different dimensions, the shoulders are totally different in design, the head is clearly not the same sculpt johnbonhamatron is doing, the johnbonhamatron kit adds pieces to the thighs, whereas Beelzeboss adds pieces to the knees, johnbonhamatron changes the feet entirely, but Beelzeboss doesn't... they're just not the same kit.

They do the same conceptual thing to the same original piece, so they are going to look similar, but if you do a more careful comparison of the designs, it's clear they are different pieces. If you're objecting to all 3P stuff, well, then you're in the wrong forum, but if you are worried that buying this kit is supporting someone who's outright copying some hobbyist's work and selling it for profit, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I think why some of us are siding with Jon is because he innovated the designs himself, whereas Beelzeboss is a third party group-Entire teams dividing the work while Jon and a few prototype testers spend their own money for the sake of others. That, and whenever you paint something yourself, you're putting blood, sweat, and expensive paint into it, so you appreciate it more.

    Just my 2 cents.
