I didn't grow up watching Beast Wars, but I've recently started to watch it and now I'm hooked.

I don't get the whole Prime decendent thing. How does a Transformer become a decendent?

why did the fractions changed their names?

Not sure about the first question... it is a good one though.
The 2nd one however, I believe they renamed themselves after they upgraded themselves to be more energy efficient. Kinda like Transformer Hybrid cars :)

Not sure what you mean about "Prime decendents", could you put it in context for us? I do recall both factions claiming to be decendents of 'bots and 'cons...

As to the faction name changes, in the eons between the end of G1 and the start of BW the Transformers race evolved. They became more and more fuel efficent, abandoned lasercores in favor of sparks and downsized their bodies. At some point, it would seem, both sides had changed enough in both physical make-up and spirit to warrent new identifiers. Hence the new faction names.

Over the course of the series they refer to the differences in technology often enough to make one believe things have changed a lot over time.

If you are referring to Optimus Primal and Megatron, I believe they just named themselves after G1 Prime and Megs.

That's true for Megs. But not for Primal I think.

you need to take any "relations" when it comes to transformers with a grain of salt. There are no fathers etc, so no uncles or Aunts (sorry rattrap). Brothers have been explained as a split spark, or some sort of identical models made at the same time...but the term brother is often used in the non-literal sense too (like when Prime called Megatron brother in the 2007 movie)

Brothers can also refer to Transformers created at the same time. (I.E. RiD Optimus/Fire Convoy and Ultra Magnus).

    That's what I don't get. How can a Transformer be a decendent?

This is about as accurate as you get. I won't spoil it for you since I don't know how far you've gotten, but there are a few references to G1 during later episodes. That may help explain the correlation for BW to G1.

Just like in Cybertron, there was a reference when Primus explained to the autobots about the four cyber planet keys. When he does you see a G1 prime, rodimus, jazz and I can't remember the other one who are the supposed guardians of the keys from the ancient past...

loose references is all it is IMHO

Perhaps in the same sense that a 2 gigahertz laptop computer of today is the 'descendant' of a 4 megahertz desktop PC of 1982.

I was just about to use that analogy. Ipod is the descendant of a cassette walkman :)

And I was wrong about Primal, it is his name sake according to the tf wiki.

However, don't breeze past the fact that the whole series was originally intended to not even be a Transformers series, and that they went with the Transformers history late in the production of the show. So when it comes down to it, the names were picked for the same reason as they were for A/E/C, RID, and every other alternate take on the series, name recognition for the leaders.
