So I grew up on G1 and just started watching Beast Wars for the first time (after a friend recommended I check it out)... and it's much more awesome than I anticipated! I'm only up to episode 12 of the first season, but as I was watching ep. 12 ("Victory"), a thought occurred to me:

If Predacons can fly in bot mode, why can't Dinobot (since he was a Predacon originally)? And how come Optimus Primal can fly, but other Maximals can't? Does that ever get addressed in the series? I know it's a minor detail, but I was just curious.

The only Predacons who can fly in robot mode are Waspinator and Terrorsaur. Megatron, Blackarachnia, Tarantulas, and Scorponok are all grounded in both modes. They have flying platforms in their base that they ride around on, but those four cannot fly under their own power.

On the Maximal side, Optimus Primal is the only one who can fly, because he has jets built into his robot mode.

Beast Wars is actually very consistent about who can fly and who cannot. All the flying characters either have flight capable alternate modes, or are shown to have rocket engines when they transform into robot mode.

If you grew up on G1, you're going to love the end of season 2, by the way ;)

Thanks, that's really helpful. I'm only up to the middle of season one, so I have a lot of catching up to do... but it's fun!

also remember the reason for the beast modes, as those who can only fly in robot mode are limited in time they can due to the unstable energon

Who can fly will also change as the show moves ahead. I won't spoil it, but more characters gain flight capability and more flying characters are introduced.

But no one flies without a visible means of propulsion in Beast Wars, they'll have wings or jets or something similar.

You guys weren't kidding. I finished season one and jumped right into season two, and find myself trying to catch my breath after all the cool stuff & drastic changes that happen so quickly.

    I'm really enjoying the ride.

Just wondering. Can Transmetal Optimus fly in robot mode?

TM Optimus Primal can only fly in beast flight mode. All of the Transmetals had a third vehicle mode that basically adds to their beast mode.

Did you forget Inferno? Don't forget Transmetal Megatron-both forms

On the Maximal side, we had Transmetal Cheetor, Silverbolt, and Depth Charge.

Who else thinks Inferno, Terrorsaur, and Waspinator were desecendants of the G1 Seekers?

    I think so.

Don't go too fast. It was great that the seasons were spread out originally to keep some of the surprises a secret longer.

I'm having the same issue with TFA. Can't get enough of either and am sad there are "final" episodes to be watched.

That was his beast mode. As someone said earlier, Transmetals had a third vehicle mode. This was usually only available in beast mode as, I assume, there needed to be an excuse for the characters to still use their beast modes once they went Transmetal and the energon radiation didn't effect their new robot modes.

I didn't forget. I saw where he was in the series and only posted information up to that point. Didn't want to spoil the wild ride still in store.

And believe me, it's a wild ride!

    Also:
Tigerhawk and Transmutate were also both flight-capable

As far as Seekers go - Terrorsaur is most certainly a Starscream archetype. Waspinator is closer to an Insecticon than anything else, though - maybe his nigh-indestructability is a throwback to the Insecticon clones?

Thing is, those guys were written without the idea of being descended from anyone.

Nah - even I had to stop and think about it for a second. His hoverboard thingy becomes his lower legs and feet in robot mode so he can't be roboting and surfing at the same time.
