I got Fox Kids Rhinox, BM Dinotron and BW B'boom today. Rhinox is the panel-ridden dork I expected but it's nice to finally have a version of the figure. I really dig the peculiar grey and the stripes, it manages to combine naturalism and fantasy in a very nicely balanced way. Dinotron is also the first version of his mould family I own. It's a little awkward how the sides don't seem to click into place in robot mode so they tend to wiggle around a little because the arm joints are stiffer. Wonderful colour scheme, though, and I'm beginning to appreciate how much the BW line liked spinning elements in its transformers.

I wish B'boom was dark brown instead of metallic blue but the overall set of colours do still work okay on their own terms and I think they didn't want the ape and the monkey to be too similar. One thing that really strikes me with B'boom is how intricate BW toys could be. His mouth doesn't just open to reveal a missile launcher, the eyes pop open with a spring and the launcher has a lever for you to push it forward and fire it as well. That and his frankly strange chest transformation isn't something you see too much of since then. My real gripe with this figure is that his animal butt plate restricts his legs in robot mode so they can't actually be posed straight down. This would've been avoided if it was just straight up bigger, allowing for more room to move. Since his entire robot lower body is mechanically separate from the rest of him (IE, it doesn't tab into place or fold out from anywhere else, it's just there but folded into beast configuration) the plate could even have telescoped out somehow without interfering. His butt is frankly small, anyway.

Another thing about B'boom - everyone likes giving the toy shit for the "attack mode" and I agree that it's kind of weird, especially since the instructions are somewhat unclear on exactly how you're supposed to position the various extremities (to say nothing of the hilarious gun/chest chain of joints), but I appreciate that he has it. A guerilla soldier having a beast mode for stealth and mobility and an artillery and anti-air platform for heavy combat really does conceptually work and makes B'boom more intimidating than the typical Maximal.

It's silly, but a bit awesome if you've got a Basic or two to man the attack mode. And really, it's not all that much sillier than 90% of the other "attack modes" the line had. Bonecrusher just pokes his head out from the bison's back to spit a missile, and Retrax curls into a ball as though trying to imitate Unicron.

People give B'boom hell for his attack mode, but need I remind them of Longrack's "battle mode"?

I just got the PE Primal and it looks great my biggest complain is the huge wings on the arms.

I forgot about that! What is it even supposed to accomplish? It strikes me now that it would've been cooler if his third mode was meant to be a construction crane.

"Eeeh *nibbles carrot* What's up, Preds?"

I dunno what it was trying to accomplish, most BWN toys had "battle/weapon" modes that pretty much just involved mashing up the beast mode. The worst was probably Mach Kick's "mangled horse" mode.
