I was revisiting some of my lesser handled TFs this weekend and I opened a couple of Beast Machine boxes that were kept in storage for the past 5 years.

I was shocked to see my Mega Jetstorm's beautiful chromed paint cracking and peeling. The vac chrome has turned brittle and falls off with the slightest touch!

I vaguely remember seeing a thread about this a long time ago, but didn't realize the severity of the problem. Other figures are suffering from the same problem - Blastcharge, OpOp and others.

I find it odd that the chrome on other TF lines, like old G1 and G2 figures stood the test of time, but chipped on BM toys. It almost looks like the chrome doesn't adhere well to the type of plastic used on Beast Machine molds, I dunno.

Still, this was a grim discovery. Not sure what can be done to stop the process.

Most of my TM2 Beast Wars toys have the same problem.

It's annoying when my 20 year old toys that have had god knows how many owners have nice shiny chrome, yet my 10 year old toys that I bought new and have looked after well are shedding their shiny skin....

My BM Jetstorm is screwed; I'm currently hunting for another one. My other BM toys are fine, though (touch wood).
Beast Wars toys are even more dodgy on the chrome; be VERY careful with them, especially TM2s.

Yeah, I don't even open my BM bin anymore. The chrome flaking is depressing and the sculpts have gotten so much better anyway. I even see it on Fire Convoy and Gigatron.

I’m a little scare to look now.

I noticed this on my BW Transmetals too...

    Damn, how depressing.

Save for OpOp My BW Transmetal 2 stuff looks okay, so does my Car Robots stuff. No cracked rubber wheels, but the rubber threads on BW Rampage is starting to lose its elasticity and shape.

Why must our beloved toys degrade so quickly? :cry

I could make some joke about Beast Machines deserving it for sucking, but this is what killed all my transmetals, so I am sad.

Hmm, none of mine have had that happen, never to early to think of solutions.

I always wondered, honestly, would putting armor-all on the rubber tires prevent them from cracking? seems like it would, as that's what it's supposed to prevent in real cars.

My PP has minor chipping. He's on display mostly so it's no biggie.

Cheetor is another story. Poor guy, never stood a chance.

For those whom have TM that haven't started flaking yet...wonder if you could spray or brush on some sort of clear coat to prevent it...?

What were the storage conditions for where they were kept the last 5 years? Moisture, dryness, lack of air circulation, too much air circulation, pressure, etc. are all out to get us.

I got a bunch of TMs this year, kind of scared. :(

Would having a small portable heater sit in front of my glass cabinet (Detolf) not be a good idea? My TMs are in there right now. I tried to move the heater away from the cabinet as far as I can though, can't really leave it off since I'm in the basement and it's cold down here. I don't think any or much heat gets close at all to the toys.

My MOSC BW TM Rattrap looks horrible due to this problem. :(  At least I still have the Walmart blue repaint, which for whatever reason hasn't had this happen.

none of my figures has this problem.

the biggest contributor to the issue is moisture. if you have them sealed up and they can't "breathe", they flake. so I keep my transmetals in cardboard boxes that have open tops. sure enough, they're all still pretty.

wait, so does this mean that all of you with flaking issues keep them stored up? if you have them on shelves they won't flake!

    not at all.

it depends on the humidity of the air too. I have a dehumidifier in my room.
