He was supposed to die in combat beneath the freeway after backing-up Bonecrusher in his fight with Optimus. If I'm remembering correctly, Optimus smashed him against one of the freeway pillars.

And the reason that didn't happen was they basically ran out of time and money and decided it was relatively unimportant compared to all the other stuff they had to finish.

Plus, I believe it was Bay himself who decided Barricade was just an awesome character whom he was ultimately glad got overlooked at the end of the first film so they could further exploit his potential in successive films. Presumably, he was just lost in the shuffle and chaos of the writer's strike of '09 and the rush to get things moving on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

And if he was originally scripted in the role of Sideways at the start of that film, I've always wondered if maybe he wasn't replaced for a more lucrative deal plugging a different alt. mode.

Don't forget they also edited the movie so he wouldn't get killed.

    ...

Running out of money and time to film and animate a scene ≠ "edited."

The blockhead design actually originates from G1 Brawl, specifically his toy. All the Scramble-style combiner limb bots had blockheads as they also served as the combiner peg.

    I liked Barricade.

He's also one of the few movie Decepticons to not be a complete moron.

Barricade was also pretty much the only Decepticon that looked like an actual transformer, and not like a swirling pile of rusty razorblades and barbed wire held together with broken glass and bandsaw blades. he had some color to him. The rest were just messes of metal and pointy shapes.

Additionally, he showed up in IDW, in the 'Punishment' comic, as a Decepticon cop, and a fairly badass one at that.

I really hope he shows up more, he was pretty cool in that story.

I'll have to track it down. Sounds like it's good. Makes me laugh in context of the DS game, where he was apparently the defacto leader despite Staracream's presence.

Yeah, same here. The Aligned continuity design for Barry is pretty boss.

It is. If they combined his TF Universe robot mode with his movie alt mode, it would be a thing of beauty :)

I really could go for a new Barricade toy based on that.
