Wow, that's some oddity power right there. Must say, I feel the pull of that robot though. It's huge looking, and (sort of) transforms. Ack. Too many other things to buy.

Spider-man is actually what set the precedent for giant robots in sentai series, I believe. 'Swhy there's an SOC that's been made, apparently. Before his show, I dun think sentai had robots for their heroes.

He has been out in Asia for almost a week now but the toy is so cheesy that I passed it up! LOL! But I have to admit the SOC line is really producing nice surprises!

That's right, only Ultraman-like scifi vehicles. It whas also the first one in wich the monster of the week grew big.

The first official Super Sentai robot whas Battle Fever Robo wich came out the year after.

The show was part of a four-year deal between Marvel comics and Toei. Marvel gave Toei the rights to the character for a live-action show. Then Bandai stepped in and pressured Toei into dropping the classic Spider-Man story and inventing something new. And so we got a Spider-Man who received his powers from an alien bracelet and could combine his flying car with an alien spaceship to form a giant robot called Leopardon. While its mostly a weird curiosity now, it is notable for being the first Japanese hero show where the hero fought and defeated monsters as himself, then fought a giant version of the same monster with the aid of a robot (previous shows featured only one of those two kinds of fights).

Marvel's partnership with Toei also led to the 1979 season of Sentai, which was designed to feature a Captain Japan and a team of other national Captains (obviously inspired by Marvel's Captain America). The show changed from that concept during the creative stage, though, and ended up as Battle Fever J, which still had the national heroes, but lost the "Captain" monikers.

Marvel's copyright also appeared on the next two Sentai series, Denjiman and Sun Vulcan, although there was no apparent Marvel influence on either show. After those two, Marvel and Toei's deal expired and Marvel made no further attempts to license characters for Japanese TV.

(I wrote a paper on this subject a couple years ago)

...that is thoroughly bizarre. Nice design, though. And I LOVE that stand.

Toei Spiderman is said to be the inspiration for all the Power Rangers stuff. Stan the Man Lee should sue them too!

Actually it appears he liked it a lot, and from all indications liked it more than the 70's show that was aired in the US.

I think he means sue all the Power Ranger type shows for being like the Spiderman show. I wish that these SOCs weren't so expensive, and I wish I wasn't such a broke ass cause I would buy them all. Wonder if the Toei Spiderman is available on DVD.

And Toei just did their own version of Powerpuff Girls. Once again, they completely missed the point.
