I wanted to create a sketch of something Robocop the other day, so this is what I ended up with. I thought I'd use the heavy Sharpie for this one.

For those of you unfamiliar with this scene, this is Alex Murphy during the van chase of the first Robocop film, just before he shots the thug Bobby is in the leg and tossed out by Clarence.

    It's also my current siggy:

I hope you like it! :)

That is awesome. I remember having the black and white Robocop comic book when I was a kid, and this looks much better than anything in that!

Pretty cool. I'm a big fan of artwork that recreates a still from a film or whatever in black and white linework.

This picture reminds me I have a similar Robocop piece I did probably back when the first movie came out that I might dig up and post.

I think my favorite part is how you captured the illusion of movement and speed on that little segment of the pavement visible.

Again, thanks so very much for your comments, guys! They are much appreciated!

I'm curious as to which issue that may have been. Honestly, one of the reasons I drew Robo as a kid quite a bit is that the devil is in the details with him and many artists just missed that boat I felt. Robocop is a very particular character (Weller's face, for example, as well as the Roboarmor details), and it's always jarring to me when I see him illustrated as I perceive "inaccurately". Your comparison compliments mean a lot :)

I'm really glad my work enticed you to dig up your work and share. :)

    Thanks!

This is one of the main things I really went after. I'm glad that it translates :)

That detail is one of the only things not really found on the screencap, but I wanted to add it. I'm glad you like it! I think the lamp posts really accentuate the rhythm of movement how Verhoeven shot it. Speaking of which, that's one of the great things about this movie is how each scene is shot. When people really make an effort to get past the silly concept on the surface and put this movie on the operating table, they can find just how well it holds up. Here's two examples: Great Shots: Robocop - Picture's Up
Shot by Shot: Robocop Arrives - Picture's Up

He might mean the comic adaptation of the first movie. Which was a great comic. All nice black and white ink-work - very useful for taking ideas from for inking techniques. Very I'm pretty sure I still have mine... somewhere.

Speaking of B&W inking inspirations, I found a lot of inspirations in the old Rogue Trooper strips. Actually all of 2000AD had a ton of great old inks to get inspired by, such as ABC Warriors and Nemesis the Warlock. Eagle comic too if I remember correctly, specifically the Doomlord strip (which was originally a photo strip). And Look-In ran a fantastic comic tie-in strip for the old puppet sci-fi television show Star Fleet way back in 1983. Anyone even remotely interested in nice black and white ink-work should track that down online as it's pretty easy to find.

Whoops, sorry - hi-jacking your thread with my inking obsessions.

Robocop is a legtimiately great film. On the surface it's a sci-fi action piece, but the level of cinematic depth, as well as social commentary, is staggering when you realize it. I remember reading this huge essay on Robocop as a post-marxist commentary on the economic climate in the 80s, and it was really interesting. Even just the little details to portray Murphy/Robocop as a Christlike-figure are subtle but at the same time really cool in the context of the film.

The Critereon collection DVD has some really neat commentary and bonus content.

Quaddy, a wonderful B&W and one of your favorite subjects too! Your attention to detail, with Sharpies no less, is amazing and so neat, I'd make such as mess I'm sure.....you could use this art as your siggie. Good eye and good work! :thumb

    Thanks!

Totally cool by me :)  Tangents like this are very healthy for art discussion imo :)

I'd really like to read that essay sometime :)  Much of the longevity of Robo has to do with everything discussed here. It's also why much of everything that has been made after part 2 has failed. Part 2 certainly isn't the masterpiece of the first, but it's still got a lot of strengths over everything else as well.

I was happy to find a copy of the Critereon version at my local used bookstore not long ago :)

Thanks a lot, and it'll most likely end up in siggy format at some point :)

I had plans of having another piece I've worked on this week up, but my computer was slower than Christmas today. I've got it scanned in, but like this one, there are some minor edits and so forth I want to do.

Thanks again for the comments, gang :)
