there is a bit of a problem with this question and its this neither could have existedinthe 1980s for the show there new animation techinques that are usedin all cartoons/anime that did not exist back then, the could have made animated fairly close to what it is now but not fully, and as for the toy they did not have some of the technology that goes into the most current toys, most importantly the ball joint so for the question setting aside these fact id say yes

EDIT: was in a hurry and misread what you posted. I agree with you on the technology issues.

What kid doesn't love animated Blitzwing?

Plus, Arnold was HUGE IN THE 80's, more people would have caught on to the reference.

If Animated had been first in the 80's, I don't think anything would have followed. I'm not even sure if I would have become a fan. The Fan Nods in Animated would have been meaningless, and by not making all the characters into toys it would have been a death nell. Hasbro would have gone onto something else and perhaps the Gobots would have recovered from the Rock Lords.

Umm... if that were the case, wouldn't Animated be consiterd G1?

RAAAAR! This hypothetical question is too hypothetical!! :D

I loved Mighty Orbots back in the eigthies, so I probably would have liked TFA.

    (still want Orbots toys)

Probably not. I would have taken one look at the animation style and turned it off. Transformers Animated also would have been competing against GI Joe, Thundercats, and many more shows that look A LOT better than TFA. Plus half the reason anyone even liked Animated was for the references to G1.

But that would be for the hardcore fanbase though. How often were Animated's scripts geared towards a general audience, wherein you could give references to G1 and the story would still work, even if that reference flew over their heads?

No, I liked the more realistic style of G1, and it looks Japanese which was important to me too. I never liked much american animation as a kid.

Well it has robots that turn into things which is awesome. As a kid I also watched horridly animated things like a lot things Hannah Barbara produced in the 70's so I suppose my artistic standards weren't as high back then.

I suppose I'd have watched it, but seeing as to how I was 4 at the time, I'd have found the story hard to follow, and with robots fighting human villains in most of the first season rather than other robots, I can't say it would have appealed to me as much as G1. Even Gobots got that part right with robots fighting other robots.

Probably. It was that initial spark as a kid that made G1 my favourite. It may well have been the same if TA came out when I was young.
That said, childhood aside, I prefer the more realistic anime look of the G1 series, I even prefer the look of RID. Its the look and animation that plays a more important part where I am at the moment in my adulthood.

G1 may have had many stories I'd rather forget, but it had good ones too.
Its obvious that shows written today are much more reliant on story arcs and solid continuity. In the days when these seed shows appeared and originated, like TF, Dr Who, etc, the best process they had for storytelling was 'Making it up as they went along'.
They weren't bothered much with how one aspect would derail or retcon something else - the interviews and write-ups about the 86 film show just how arrogant, or oblivious, they were to the fanbase in its' infancy.
These days the awareness of an established fanbase makes things tougher to pull off.

Maybe I would have possibly liked it, if there wasn't anything before to compare with.
