In the special features for the Ultimate Avengers DVD they talk about the restarting the Avengers comic and after seeing the movie I’m all hopped up and goofy on this team. Looking around I see Avengers Assemble vol. 1 and 2, Avengers Disassembled and New Avengers vol. 1-3. Having been out of comics for a few years now I don’t know where to start and sure don’t want to jump in super deep and start buying everything so where do you guys think I should start? I would be willing to start with two books so should I go for Avengers Assemble vol. 1 and 2, Disassembled and New Avengers vol. 1, or New Avengers vol. 1 and 2?

I really liked the movie but I have history with the standard Marvel universe and think I would rather stay there.

So far Twin Twist is winning.

Plus, New Avengers has both Spider-Man, and Spider-Woman! HAWT!

And the good thing is you don't really need any prior knowledge, and there are two TPB's out of it. Whoo!

No, it just finishes off the old Avengers. Forget it, it's not got Spider-Man!

    Go web, go.

Out of interest, are the New Avengers linked to the Young Avengers?

The Avengers Assemble TPBs should be pretty good, too. If I remember correctly they collect Busiek and Perez's run, which was not only very good, but it fixed all of the stupid crap that had happened to the Avengers in the 90s.

Rumor has it that the Young Avengers might become New Avengers.

You should at least experiment with the first Ultimates TPB. I would have to say it is probably my personal favorite of my various compilations, and is just an exhilirating story which is not an adjective I would use for many other comic book stories. There really is no comparison between the Hulk ultimates battle, and pretty much any other marvel comics battle that has occured.

I really enjoy the New Avengers also, but it is not nearly as witty or exciting.

I may have to read New Avengers. I highly doubt anything could be better than The Ultimates. They are a very unique spin on the classical super team. Instead of fighting random villains all the time they go into the detail of the day to day running of a super team in thier own book, with the major super battles coming near the end of a volume. They also do crossovers with the other Ultimate heroes. If the only reason you really love New Avengers so much is Spierwoman, then read Ultimate Six. It has Spider Man as a guest member of The Ultimates. Also, he has been told that as soon as he turns 18 he will become government property, so I assume that he will be forced to join The Ultimates after that.

I think I’m going to start with New Avengers, probable get Disassembled just to see how the old ended. If my interest holds I might look into the Ultimates.

Thanks for the input every one.

You should reverse that order since you decided to look at Avengers after seeing the movie. Ultimate Avengers is based on the plot for The Ultimates, but with plot points removed and inferior art.

I read Avengers for about a year in the late 80’s and was big time into Marvel comics for about 10 years (still have all my comics in storage) so I am already familiar with the back stories on the characters. I have just been away from comics for a while, the movie re-sparked interest in the characters and the special features with the writer and artist re-sparked interest in the original Marvel universe.

I also have a copy of this
