Can autobots contact each other remotely via comlink?

Remember in ROTF, when Sam & Co. were in Egypt, and NEST had just arrived, they didn't use Bumblebee or the twins to contact them and give them their location. They also needed Simmons to contact NEST to tell them to come to Egypt.

In contrast, in TF1, Starscream mobilised all the decepticons by broadcasting a single message. We also had Soundwave relaying messages to and fro between Decepticons.

Therefore, can we conclude that Movie Autobots can't communicate through remote comlinks like their cartoon counterparts? Was there any part in either movie where they communicated long distance?

Let's not include Prime & Bumblebee's messages to space. Those were a different form of communications. They were not direct radio messages to a single party.

I think they were able to in prequel novel to the first movie. I think it was titled "Ghosts of Yesterday" and I seem to remember Bumblebee being attacked by giant worms and calling for help via comlink.

    I could be wrong, though.

Autobots contacted NEST to inform them they were on the hunt for Decepticons in the USA..but maybe that's a different system used. I've seen no evidence of comlinks between bots in the movies so far.

I think they used the Phone so the NEST Humans didnt hear an Autobot talking to itself about getting to Eygpt, aka talking over the Comlink. And face it, if one of the Autobots went walking around to tell Lennox, Galloway would have had a hissy fit.

I was under the impression that Soundwave was jamming all such signals.

Starscream called the Decepticons to assemble near the end of the first movie so as long as we don't assume Soundwave was acting like a telephone exchange at that early point I'd say the technology exists. And the Autobots would likely have it too otherwise the Decepticons would have a huge advantage in the war.
I'd imagine any army would have a means to communincate with each other, and since the TFs are machines themselves that technology is probably built into their bodies.

Autobots have comlink communication only on Cybertron, because that's where their network is. The Decepticons were able to communicate because Soundwave was their network.

I just think this was a glaring error on behalf of Bay and Co. They should be able to contact each other easily with their technology.

Since the Autobots were able to use the internet to learn our language and other things they could probably use it as a network to communicate with each other too.
Really though, since communication between command and troops is so important in war I cannot imagine the Autobots would put themselves at such a huge disadvantage by not having this capability, even if it meant they left a communications satellite in orbit or set up an antenna on a mountain or something to make it possible.
Besides, maybe Blaster is kicking it in Earth orbit somewhere relaying the calls. :)

You forget that the humans wouldn't allow an alien satellite into the planet's orbit (they still don't know about Soundwave, though). Internet can't be used much, as they don't have anything there to keep in touch enough fast so that the battle plans can be done. Also, that Blaster idea would be so awesome for TF3.

With regards to Soundwave, the Autobots are in dire need of a communications specialist. That would make them much more of a force to be reckoned with.
