Disciples of Boltax: Autobot City concept art
For being a place that houses robots, it looks an awful lot like a medieval castle. But, this was the 80's when that was drawn right? I suppose that fits in with what they thought "futuristic technology" would be like.
Not that we know a whole lot better now or anything.
That is one big bowl.
I can't look at anything Floro Dery does the same way after this article. Floro Dery.
If I remember correctly, Floro Dery said that his idea for Autobot city was to be something like a hand... which closed into a fist when under attack. He also said he didn't want to share that art for fear his idea would be stolen.
It's possible this is concept art for that very version of Autobot city.
Does anyone else remember Dery saying this stuff? I'm looking for the page I saw it on right now.
EDIT - Found Dery's site on the wayback machine. I'm fairly sure that's where I saw the statements above. Can't get his TF concept art to load. However, the Disciples of Boltax have, if you read the article, posted the entire pic, without Dery's notes, in an earlier post. It confirms the whole "city as giant hand" thing.
For some reason, this makes me want to see a Bay-styled citybot transform on screen. The magnitude of it all would be awesome.
The podcast bros will get a kick out of this. I haven't tuned in recently but they love anything Floro Dery related.
I was thinking the same thing, but it kind of looks like the Transformer version of the Cobra Terrordrome... to me anyway.
I was wondering if anyone else had noticed that too?
Wow, that's... interesting, to say in the least.
Ugly as sin. Glad it wasn't used.
i still want to see Bay's dream transformer come to life, an decepticon aircraft carrier.....GIVE ME TIDAL WAVE DAMNIT!
Way too far out, doesn't "fit" the Autobots nearly as much as the simpler design of the final one, but it certainly is cool to see.
You're too hard on Floro Dery, of the stuff I've seen that's definitely his (especially the movie stuff) He really added so much to the franchise.
Cool piece of artwork. It wouldn't have been so bad if they'd used it, but I do prefer the final design. That's probably just familiarity though. I guess this was before they said "make it look more like our new toy, Metroplex!"
If they showed robots in the art, I'd halfway expect them all to look like Knights in shining armor.
funny thing is, with the whole 'hand that closes into a fist' concept, I can't help but think of Metroplex in the Marvel UK books (Think it was space pirates) where he burst out of the ground. Just imagine how vast this citybot would be if this design WAS just his hand!
This was my initial thought as well. *ahem* Despite the comments made of Floro Dery himself, I've always enjoyed the artwork. This is really interesting to see as are similar things on the cutting room floors of productions
Love seeing this visual development art! Thanks Jim for sharing it with the nerdy masses!!!
The observation tower looks very volatile. Would a few direct hits from the seekers can topple it in seconds?
It's the CN tower inside a giant bowl...
...I like it!
This one drawing has more thought, originality, inspiration and creativity than 2 feature length live action transformers movies.
