Congratulations to Tiby at OzFormers and all who contributed and petitioned!

A collector's club is now being formed in order to comply with laws regarding the ownership in NSW of MP-5 Megarton.

This is pretty much the best outcome that us NSW Aussies could have hoped for. Hopefully other states where it is still illegal will follow.

Police Minister David Campbel's announcement and updates of the collector's club can be viewed on Tiby's Homepage here:

Thanks also to TFW2005 and Mr_K for the first reports of MP-5 seizures.

I'm sorry... I don't want this to reflect badly on the rest of your country... but that is completely retarded! I had no idea that the bureaucracy was so absurd down there (though I guess you were actually able to get real letters back from some of these government people you contacted... that's sort of cool).

Replica firearm? My god, so they don't have any toy guns in Oz? Seriously?

It's like the world's gone upside down... er... crazy. ;)

Well it's nice to hear they're doing something and listening rather than leave it alone and do nothing.

It's better than the "If it's not in the rules we ain't doing anything" crap the US gets.

I don't have the toy (glad I decided not to...) so it doesn't affect me, but I'd like to congratulate the outcome. It must have been a tough battle.
Sounds like a lot of hassle, but better than having a $100 toy confiscated I am sure :)

Keep in mind the G1 version was removed from sale there after some twit used it to try and rob a convenience store.

I'm glad to see that you all were able to do somthing about it and actually get the gov't to listen and give you an option. And to think when that guy started that thread warning Aussies before it's release *here* , they did everything but string him up from a tree and beat him with a stick for saying so. I felt bad for the guy, even if it would have turned out to be wrong, he was just trying to warn people.

    EDIT: That sig is awsome!

We here in Canada would be in a worse situation if Canada customs had classed MP Megs as a replica hand gun and not a toy. Replica firearms are prohibited in Canada. You can't legally* own them period, full stop, end of. Auzzieland lets you get a gun licence to own one at least.

*My brother smuggled another type of prohibited weapon back from europe with him. A butterfly knife he got in France. He got it through the air port rolled up in socks inside a steeltoed boot.

Except for being, y'know, friggin' gigantic.

A "genuine reason" -- as opposed to a fake reason for owning a toy? -- and "proof of membership" sound like they were just trying to come up with extra hoops through which to jump.

And a locked cabinet for a toy gun? Wow.

    I'm glad to hear that.
And G1 Megatron - most polemic Transformer, EVER. From the Nazist bits in his design to all the recent garbage about gun-like toys. You gotta love Megs for that alone :rock

I find it funny that it's easier to import paintball and airsoft guns than Masterpiece Megs...

Paintball and Airsoft guns could still seriously harm someone at pointblank distance. Megs on the other hand... People will realize he's a toy!

We largely banned most forms of firearms ownership here and most gun owners voluntarily handed in their guns to be destroyed about a decade back.

So now the police and the government are making absolutely, positively sure you're not some upstart gang that can't afford a real illegal gun who is buying a relatively cheap MP Megs to rob some stores. I doubt anybody who wants Megatron for nefarious reasons will spend the time writing a passionate letter about what Transformers means for them and why they need a Megatron for their collection.

Another thing, we do not have a 'gun culture' here, so we are generally unfamiliar with firearms, and when you produce a firearm, toy or not, in public, that's naturally going to cause problems. Besides, we have already read stories on this very board and other boards about police or the public in the United States being alarmed at the sight of G1 Megatron or MP Megatron being brandished by collectors. And that's in a country where real guns are beloved.

Can you imagine what would happen in a country where guns are feared?
