Passports are now REQUIRED for entry in to the United States. That means for Canada and Mexico. Birth certificates *WILL NOT WORK* ... must have a valid and current passport.

    Just an FYI.

Unless you are driving, in which case ignore what he just said.

If you are flying from Canada a Passport is required, if you are driving you only need three pieces of Government ID, Drivers license (or equivalent photo ID), Birth Certificate, and one other.

I have already spoken to the Government of Canada about it.

    Just FYI gang.

I've never been to the US without my passport anyway; I didn't even know you could get in without one. Still, good to have the heads-up for those who didn't know. Nice one d00d.

It's a surprise to me too, I always thought a passport was a prerequesite for travel outside of your home country

No, I used to fly into Canada periodically for work a few years back, and used my birth certificate a couple of times. Of course, that was prior to 2001...

Personally I prefer to at least think it is; saves a lot of hassle.

A passport was always required for European's travelling to the USA. The recent change affects Canada, Mexico and some Island states that had alternate ID arrangements for travel. The reverse effect is true - American's who wish to travel to Canada/Mexico and a few other places will now have to carry passports.

I always figured passports were mandatory too, hehe.

There's no reason -not- to get one, it makes things much easier I'd figure.

Probably I'm gonna be there with TWO passports, since my visa is stamped in the old one.

Considering Canada and USA have shared a long time standing friendship, trading agreements and many other things, asking for a Passport on either side of the border is an insult. We are not just allies, neighbours, and trading partners. We are supposed to be friends and family. It is an insult to the people who built our two great nations on respect and trust. By doing what the US is doing in asking for passports, forcing Canada to have to do the same we are giving in to fear of the terrorists, exactly what they want.

Someone should slap the shit out of our collective Evanglistic torthead leaders.

    Whoah.

Don't try springing that philosophy at the border guards. Passports should be required to enter and leave any country as far as I'm concerned.

It all adds to the adventure...

Considering you don't understand the effect this is having on both our nations, I'll simply pass on saying anything further.
