alright, I'm officially confused at the different color astrotrain figures. was the white astrotrain ever released before the hasbro/takara reissues? I'm thinking the white one was put out in japan as a diaclone, and then hasbro changed the color for the US release. then there was the ehobby anime reissue, and the tfc and comemorative reissues in white. do I have it all correct? my main confusion is why would hasbro reissue a color different from what they did in the 80's? danke.

Well, I'm no Nevermore, but here's your answer. The white astrotrain was originally released in Japan during generation 1. Then Hasbro released their purple and black version for the American G1 series. Takara then re-released the purple and black version in the Japanese market (I'm sure someone can tell you the different Takara release numbers). Then Takara and Hasbro re-released the white Astrotrain in the TFC and Commemorative Series lines and e-hobby re-released the grey version which was only previously ever seen in the original cross promotional box inserts.

interesting, so takara released the us g1 version. I wonder why so many different color schemes have been used for the same character, and what the history is of the e-hobby color scheme. why did it only exist in the insert catalogues?

When the pics are taken for packaging and catalogs for a toy it is usually done when the toy is in it's last stage of being approved. So a few last minute changes can be made that will make the final product a little different. And sometimes, in the case of Astrotrain, it can make a big difference.

An example of a minior change would be the Red faced Slag. The US got the black face ones, while a few Red face ones were released in Canada.

Another example would be that Weirdwolf's box pics had his Beast mode's ears molded differently than the toy that was in the box. the reason for the change was that the ears were deemed to be too sharp and had to be filled down for the final production.

These explanations are all correct, but Maz does a killer rundown here, telling you everything you ever wanted to know about Astrotrain. He's thorough, that Maz.

There are color differences between the original off-white/Purple and the E-Hobby version.

I think ehobby should produce more anime astrotrain. Now a misb one goes for $300+, even more than G1. What a load of bull. I got a question about ehobby repaint of Blitzwing is it the same color as the Diaclone version?

    Hi there,

The versions of Astrotrain (grey/purple from catalog) and Weirdwolf (from box and US tv ad) that you mention are far from being final production stages.

Both of those items were hand-painted resin prototypes. In the case of Astrotrain even the mould was different as he had extendable arms, and some fo the protos shown in the catalog didn't even transform, they were glued together.

    All the best
    Maz

Very very very soon! All articles have been converted to the new format, the front page is finished and I've written about 5 new articles I'm really happy with as well. I've also seriously revamped and added to a number of other articles.

All that needs to be done now is submenu pages (not hard at all), linking, some little tweaks etc and I'm ready to launch.

All the articles you guys have kindly linked to in this thread will be available on the new site as well.

I can't tell you how excited I am!

    All the best
    Maz

Tha strange thing, is that in the old G1's catalogues Astrotrain is show accurate, like the actual eHobby version.

That's not "strange" at all. Rather, the show colors were based on the original toy colors as depicted in that catalog.

As I kid I never had or saw(that I can remember) Astrotrain. So, I always assumed that the picture in the catalogue was what the toy looked like. When I was in highschool(probably around 1997) I saw a loose Astrotrain at a comic store and I was really confused about the colors. I thought that there might have been two different versions of Astrotrain or something.
