I tried to dye Astrotrain grey over the weekend.

The good - The plastic dyed to a fantastic tone.

The bad - I wasn't very careful with the temperature and now he's warped. Still looks OK in bot mode but he can no longer transform.

I used Dylon Multi purpose, which is a UK brand of dye. It dyes buttons and such. I think my problem was that the ABS plastic needed to reach a certain temp before th colour seeped in (it was going a bit slow at a low simmer so I brought it to a boil) but there's a fine line between that temp and when the ABS starts to warp.

degree of warpage... even the gun no longer fits. Robot's articulation's still ok tho.

i'm thinking of painting him up G1 style and maybe tossing him on Ebay or something. :cry

time to get a new astro... :rip

Sorry to hear about this. The white plastic should have taken the dye fairly easily. I'm not familar with that type of dye. I've only used RIT here in the states.
Did you have any acetone in with your mix and maybe you should try dipping in the parts with a strainer spoon or basket.
The plastic shouldn't warp if you have it moving but the addition of dye might have raised the boiling point, of water, so it might have been too hot.

Are you going to try again? What character were you trying to make with a grey shuttle?

Ugh. I hate it when stuff like this happens. I warped the dickens out of a Starscream in the same way; I was trying to create Thundercracker.

Best of luck if you decide to go again.

its not a disaster, it's a "failed atmospheric re-entry" custom.

I agree, this could be salvaged as a quality battle damaged figure.

Bummer about the warping.... I had the same thing happen to a pair of Alt. Prowl legs, it is really annoying. I guess the key is just to do lots of quick dips in the dye, then take the plastic out and let it cool before dipping again.

However, I would say all is not lost! Between the warping and that great charred look the dye gave him, you're awfully close to having a great battle-damaged Astrotrain. Maybe you could add some blast marks, or shattered windows, or chipped wings, or something. Even his cobbled-together transformation screams "mortally-wounded Transformer." He IS a space shuttle, after all.... maybe atmospheric re-entry just didn't go so well. :)

Anyhow, good luck, I hope the next attempt works better!

I do agree that the figure is a curiously attractive novelty due to this mishmash of colors and warpage.

Yeah... like so many others, let me offer my condolences on the warped Astrotrain...

On the other hand, WOW... he looks awesome! Too bad he doesn't transform properly, but somehow the weird rounded warping really makes for a nice looking figure. I'm not even sure if the look is battle damaged so much as just "spent the last million years fighting, not bathing". It's great.

And at least it's not a really rare or expensive figure. Hey... what does his train mode look like? (does anybody even still use that mode ever?)

Out of curiosity, how did you dye him? Did you disassemble him first or just hold the whole figure under the water? I was planning on dying an Astrotrain too, but not grey... I wanted to make a Blast Off custom. Hope the colours turn out as interesting as yours (er, minus the warping...)! :)
