Devo? They did it and it sounded even more sonicly whacked-out than the original.

Nope. I hate it. Viv loves it though. She likes Heath Ledger.

Haha I knew this was going to come up.

I think any metal bands that don't necessarily have death metal style grunts and growls, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Testament, Anthrax, whatever, should totally be left alone by the bands that do, as whenever I hear full on death metal vocals on covers of the songs those bands have done, and it's happened often, it just feels so wrong.

To her credit, she has admitted she didn't even like it, it was a label decision she got pushed into

See, I'll give her some credit depending on exactly what the label's decision was. If the label told her, "Hey, make a cover of American Pie", it's entirely her fault that it turned out so horribly; she may have been forced to do a version of the song, but she wasn't forced to do such a godawful version. Now, if the label said, "Hey, we've got this cover of American Pie composed and just lying around, sing it", then I can see letting her off the hook. However, that whole "label decision" thing sounds like Madonna just trying to deflect blame from herself for butchering a classic song.

Maverick was the label when she covered "American Pie" in ~2000.

And concerning the label-decision thing (from wikipedia, so take with a grain of salt)....

It wasn't that Madonna was pressured into making the "American Pie" cover, but that she was pressured into including the song on international releases of one of her albums.

I realize Madonna didn't want to include that song on her "Music" album but was pressured to do so, but I also read she was not happy with doing the song at all really, or how it turned out. I think the song was for a soundtrack and that's where the "pressure" came from.

Oh well, either way, still a fan, and fuck off if that's a problem for you :p
