So... launched from the Flyarse thread covering Nirvana, which other bands/artists should never be covered?

It's not uncommon for someone to cover a Beatles record and it be bitchin'. Guns 'n' Roses version of Wings "Live and Let Die" was fucking awesome on toast with a side of beans.

Here is my list of bands NOBODY should be allowed to cover. Unless it's an Adam Sandler style Wedding Band, because they all rock and keep it real.

    • The Clash - I don't recall anyone even trying, if they did, it likely sucked balls.

    • Jimi Hendrix - Red Hot Chilli Peppers, prepare for your one way trip to the sun.

    • Nirvana - ...do I really need to start?

    • the Spice Girls - ...

    • the Ramones - Have some fucking respect, you jerkwads.

    • the Smiths - Every cover of "How Soon is Now?" sends Morrissey one step closer to his grave.

Sonic Youth - No. Just...no. Retune the guitar, put it down and walk away.

Minor Threat/Fugazi - "I knew Ian Mackaye. Ian Mackaye was a friend of mine. And you sir, are no Ian Mackaye."

The Pixies - Influenced by, fine..who isn't? Cover? No.

Johnny Cash - Johnny Cash was allowed to cover you...you, however, are not allowed to cover Johnny Cash...er, unless you're Social Distortion. Fuck off Coldplay.

On a related note, the only Clash cover I will accept is Social D's version of 'Death or Glory'

    ...

    No covering Social D either.

But Sinatra didn't, to my knowledge, write his own songs... ergo...

What about Muse's cover of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want? I thought that was quite good.

No one should cover Motorhead. It just wouldn't be right. I know some girl does a cover of Ace of Spades and sings it slow... it's actually painful to listen to.

I dont think anyone should try to do Led Zeppelin. I've heard a few bands try and fail miserably.

I've heard some pretty good Nirvana covers, even by local bands. The music is so rudimentary, just about anyone can play it well. Not an insult, just a fact - there's not a lot to it, at least from a technical standpoint, which often lends a band to being covered.

I seem to recall Black Sabbath's Iron Man being covered by the Cardigans. Only heard it once, but sometimes at night I still wake up screaming.

I'm curious as to why the Spice Girls are on the list.
Is it due to the fact you love their songs and want no one butchering them or that all of their songs are so mind-numbingly bad no one can actually make them worse?

    I'm hoping the latter.

Well as I live in the Redneck capitol of the world, and work with their king, I hear alot of country music. Some actually did Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and another one I can thing of right now. Country singers with no talent should attepmt anything but twang and crap.

I have a really good / funny punk version of Wannabe. It's from Heideroosjes, a Dutch punk band.

Everyone and their dog has covered Little Wing, but usually it comes across pretty well since there's minimal singing, and a lot of the covers of it skip the singing bits altogether. SRV's rocked. Skid Row, believe it or not, pulled off a major rendition of it on the B disc. Metallica's "solo break" version of it was. . .well, OK, so two out of three ain't bad.

Again, who HASN'T covered a Ramones song? And again, I'll point out that Skid Row's Psycho-Therapy cover was awesome both live and on the disc. How about we say a band has to be good enough that other people want to cover them before they're allowed to play a cover of a song by the Ramones?

I gotta throw Black Sabbath out. If I hear one more absolutely horrible rendition of War Pigs I swear to god I'm gutting some lead singers and guitarists. Neither of which have the sense to shut the fuck up and let the drummer do his little dittles during the song. Yes, great, you can get a crowd into clapping along with the high-hat pops. Good for you. If you have to rely on that song to do it, you suck. Now get off the stage and let somebody who isn't afraid of a song with more than two chords go at it.
