I went to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and all I got was a job in Columbus and more in debt going to Ohio State University. He goes there and gets into ILM!

    Great article, very informative!

joe johnston, syd mead. i like this guy.

i tend to espouse this and the article reinforces this. potential employers look at your final product to judge competency but your developmental sketches are very important. thats how you tell them 'hey! i can think!'.

For all those that said they hated the designs, I would start writing those apology letters because this guy really worked his butt off in coming up with what looks like some hardcore ideas. More respect to him.

Great article, I really loved the different colored scetches of Bumblebee's head. Looking at the number of pieces that each transformer is made up of doesn't really seem like that number. Ironhide looked to be composed of more pieces than that (and I guess it's true what they said, Ironhide's guns have more pieces than most of the other transformers).

Worth noting the BB transformation in the sketch handles the front wheels differently than the final version (in the final they directly fold behind the arms and he uses his arms to push himself up.)

That was a fascinating article! I really hope they include all kinds of stuff like that on the DVD! If they have a "how we made this movie (and why we did it this way)" segment on the DVD that is as cool as what they did for Lord of the Rings, I will be immensely happy.

I would love it if the DVD had full body show motion transformations for each robot.

The Armada Second Half DVD box set had a set of "interactive" transformation videos for the toys from the line. If they could rip-off that idea, only make it the actual movie models that you're telling to Transform, and have them go nice and slow, I'd be giddy as a school-girl. I would love to see some of the design work leading up to the final design decisions too.

Man, there'd better be a documentary twice as long as the movie about making it somewhere along the line. That kind of stuff for a special effects movie just makes me feel all squishy inside.

Alex Jaeger is Double Awesome to me because he designed the Akira, Steamrunner, Saber and Norway in Star Trek First Contact - non-standard, imaginative designs are ALWAYS welcome to a major franchise, in my book at least.

This guy has one hell of a 'dream' job. I wonder if he was browsing any of the boards and looking at all the negative feedback at the designs when they first came out. I bet he's just having one big 'HA HA, I told you so' moment if he cared. Stuff like this is really awesome. I really hope something like this is in the DVD release.

Or at least in an "Art of Transformers" type book at Barnes & Nobles.

I hope his artwork shows up in an artbook for the movie. Interesting process. I see parallels between his view on art with Aaron Archer's.

Love the concept artwork on Bee and Starscream's headshot, especially Bee's transformation sequence. If that stuff shows up in a "Making of 'Transformers'" book, I'm buying it.

You mean the empty space that can easily fold up out of sight? look at alternator windcharger or sidesipe in robot mode for an example of that.

the one thing this DOES neglect is the hood of the car.
