I'm gonna have to say G1. Just because I wasn't a big fan of the Armada TV show. That's right I base my opinions on the toys around the show. Except when I like both shows (let's say, Beast Wars and R.I.D.), if you were to ask me my favorite toyline between both of those I'd probably go for R.I.D. even thought Beast Wars is the far superior show.
These just make me laugh. And not just because "articulate" is the not a way to describe a toy unless it has a very complex speech gimmick. I'm pretty much going to have to agree with most of the posters that "G1 wins" but it's not really a fair comparison when you're talking such a large line as G1 compared to a 1.5 year line like Armada. But to use ARTICULATION as a knock against Armada??? Sure, compared to the lines which immediately preceded it (RID and the Beast-Era) Armada's articulation was a little bit of a step backwards, but how many of you have actually tried to POSE a G1 figure lately? There are a SMALL handful that have a little posability (usually in the arms, or legs, but not both), but 99.9% are total "bricks." Even with the WORST Armada molds (I'm thinking, oh Sideswipe) you can at least sort of achieve something resembling a pose. Thank you for existing OptimusSledge D/L
This is probably the most I've ever seen people here agree on something. Although, you've gotta remember that G1 covers quite a few years and different gimmicks, whereas Armada covered one or two years and one gimmick as a subline within the Unicron trilogy. Doesn't make Armada any better, although the toys might stand up to some of the tail end of G1.
for me is hard to tell (I might get killed for posting this) but I think about them in the same way that Hot Wheels collectors think of 1969 Redline cars, they look nice to be the first ones, they roll nice to be the first ones but in the end the new redline cars looks way better, and the variety is way better plus the tampos give them a huge range of possibilities in the end, I love G1 optimus prime and devastator to name a couple but I think armada went a little step ahead of them, sometimes I wonder if the case was the other way, if armada came up first and then G1 which one would you preffer?
Good points all around. Personally, Armada still leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. This line came out when I was at the peak of my interest in TFs...and with a few exceptions, they were abysmal. For any of you guys who were around back then, you'll undoubtedly remember how these forums were in a constant state of debate with half of the forum members loving the line, half hating it. The forums actually became pretty contentious and unplesant at times. I bought many Armada figs only because the reissues were few and far between, I had all of the RiD guys and I couldn't find any more Beast Wars. I still have a box of Armada figures and I can't even look at them. The contrived aesthetic, hamfisted designs, utterly shameful cartoon...they fill me with regret that those of hundreds of dollars should have been spent elsewhere.. They were an insult to any adult collector. They were an artistic low point. I can't help but think that if TFs took a different direction in 2002, I might have enjoyed those days a lot more (since it was my #1 hobby at the time). Instead, I was just annoyed and frustrated. It seems laughable now looking back that a "downturn" in a toy line could be a drag on my happiness...but it was! I have been close to putting the big box of Armada figures right into the trash on may occasions. It might still happen. I'll keep Unicron, the Minicon car ("Street Speed?") team and Deluxe Prime... but that's about it. So yeah... G1 all the way! There were a few technological improvements that made the more "modern" figures better in some measures... but in every worthwhile measure of a collectible and toy/cartoon line, G1 is in a different league from Armada.
If you don't like a box of toys you have and are considering throwing them out, there are plenty of charities that would be very grateful for them, especially four days before Christmas.
I'm just waiting for Bodycount to create a ghost account and post how Armada was the pinnacle of human achievement. Aside from giving us that douchebag to get a chuckle from and tear apart periodically, Armada was a huge waste of time and, I'm ashamed to admit, money. Though I suppose that extended viewings of the cartoon is a good, non-surgical alternative to a lobotomy and achieves the same result.
Haha... Petey, you must have been around back in those old days, right? Your screen name looks familiar.
I didnt had the chance to buy them all (only got few mini cons, optimus prime and blurr) if you are serious about throwing them away please consider shipping them to me, I would gladly pay shipping, plus something extra for them, you will be sure that here is somebody who will actually enjoy and appreciate thel Im not ashamed to say that I like Armada, maybe not my favorite line but certainly is in my top 5 list
