I think they are looking for a cover picture, much like the spotlights, which would have that character as the main focus, but I can't imagine it would hurt to have the background done too. I don't know about other characters as this would prpbaly have to relate to the story being told.

I'd rather get someone who has had less attention, TBH. The problem with getting a popular charater like Bumblebee or Prime is that there is already so many great pics done of them and voters will have these things in their mind. It would be much harder to do a pic of Bumblebee that stands out (not that I'm doubting your considerable talents though KA:)

Does anyone know who to contact about logging onto the IDW boards? Their admin email doesn't work and I'm still having a heck of a time trying to get logged in.

    [email protected]

They sorted me out pretty quickly - seems to happen a lot over there for some reason.

Except 3D artists. All this talk about "tracing" 3D art... why should we? The idea of 3D art is to make it look 3D, not 2D.
2D artists have their medium, we have ours. No discrimination? Yeah, right. Might want to take the bit about "ALL Transformers artists" out of your first post. :thumbdown

Depends what you think "artist" means. These days it's more common to include singers, songwriters, sculptors, engravers and a host of other creative peeps along with people who draw and paint.

Would class 3D modelling in with art forms such as sculpture, personally. It's an abstraction of building and cutting bits out -- don't see why either wouldn't be considered for a cover, though. In particular, a well-composed photo cover of TF art would rock, something like a metal plate with a roughed-up faction symbol on it lying torn on a verge...

Kinda surprised we don't see more people doing stuff with metal, actually.

This is the first time we've tried something like this out, so we're trying to keep it as straight forward as posible.

We're looking for covers that are ready to be colored by someone else, that's why we've gone with the "2d" lineart path.

Perhaps somewhere down the line, we might try something with 3d, but no plans yet.

I understand where you're coming from but this is a comic cover, one static image. A 3D image is going to be 2d anyways, and, it is the aim of most 2D comic art to look 3D anyways.

Plus, they are looking for a specific style. Most 3D art just has that "computer" look to it unless to digitally retouch it, use cell shading, or are ILM. Personally, though, I hate that its just lineart because like I said before IDW has alot of nice "painted" style covers and thats how I'd rather work. I'm still going to go for it though.

So are we allowed to talk about what character we got? Also I'm a little unsure as to what size to work in. The email says:

Final submitted pieces must be sized to 800 X 1300 pixels, with a resolution of 72 Dpi, and in RGB mode.

But that is a pretty narrow rectangle..it doesn't look like standard comic size to me. Anyways, I want to have a high-res copy, so I want to work in 300dpi. Can anyone give me some tips on what size to make my original 300 dpi document so it will neatly scale down to 800x1300 pixels and 72dpi? I really suck at that kind of stuff. Thanks.

Also this thread is 15 days old but the contest is still going. Actually, it's just begun.

Try doing 11x14in or 11x17, see if those document sizes will shrink to 800x1300 pixels when you change the dpi from 300 to 72. Most of the time, changing the DPI will do all the work for you.

    *edit*
here's the actual IDW art guides

i know Ryall's posted this before on the IDW boards so hopefully its cool to post it here

    personally i work at 11x17 @ 300 DPI

i'll save that as its own, then i'll adjust it to 6.877x10.5 @ 400 DPI and save that. but i dunno. whatever :p

i could use the practice regardless so it'll be fun just to give it a whack

im definately anxious to see what all 500 or so of you guys can make. gonna be some tough competition for sure!

Haha in particular I meant because you work for them :D  You know, like how most contests disallow employees and family members.

Well, techincally, Josh isn't a "professional cover artist" so there's no reason why his submission won't be "official."
