Autobots have exposed blue or bluish green optics for the most part. Decepticons have red, orange, or rarely yellow optics behind protective eye screens. Autobots have smooth fingertips like humans. Decepticons for the most part have sharp claw-like fingertips. So I am wondering if there are anatomical and genetic differences between Bots and Cons. Could those differences go so far as making them different species?

I think it's just part of the shows style to put personality into the designs. Doesn't really mean they're different species.

Theyre robots, so Id think that if they wanted to then they could just change certain parts, like eye color & fingertips as you have mentioned. Like when Starscream lost his arm in Shadowzone(?), and Knockout then just went to look for a replacement like it was no big deal. Id think they could just change/replace the parts they want. So if decepticons like redish eyes and sharp fingers as some kinda dresscode, then theyd just change them out for some. Not being a different species.

Episode 21: Ratchet implied two factions are the same species. The macguffin-of-the-day was created before the war started, thus it does not differentiate Autobot from Decepticon.

The differing physical features are probably just a result of evoking personality through design. Red eyes are usually associated with evil in cartoons, and sharp pointy things generally fall into the same category.

Why can't people grasp the idea that Cybertronians are all one race divided by idealogical differences? Human factions have been killing each other for centuries, so why do alien robots have to be different?

And even if it somehow gets washed over as some kind of racial divide, are white people a separate species from black people? No.

Its like humanity. We are separated by beliefs and ideologies. It basically the same with the cybertronians. As for Eye color, Im guessin that would either be caused by the energon flowing within them and the faction they choose.

I think Cyberstar is right with red eyes (or yellow) being some kind of dress code for the Cons. We humans can change our eye color thanks to contacts, so why shouldn't robots be able to change their eye color as well through other means? And about the sharp claws instead of hands: The Decepticons are warriors at heart, so why not make every part of their body as deadly as possible? Cliffjumper and Tailgate can tell you exactly what I mean ...

It's been touched on a few times in the show that Autobot or Decepticon is a choice that Transformers make so no one seems to have been built/born an Autobot or Decepticon.

After seeing Breakdown's eye it would seem that there must be some sort of protective screen in front of their eyes, mostly likely to keep things like sand out of the mechanical parts of their eyes. If it's just a protective screen the bots could change the color of it like we can chose different colors for safety glasses.

Things may have started off as purely ideological/political differences. But as the factions grew well-defined and allegiances grew fiercer, perhaps each side decided to use their own different methods to forge or physically modify new members, in order to foster a deeper sense of identity and to make the enemy seem alien and unrelatable.

    This.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong. But in Exodus, didn't Megatron get the Decepticons addicted to Dark Energon to increase their combat prowess. But it soon backfired as well. It might have left some physiological changes.

Other than having red eyes, I'm getting sick of the decepticons having an evil looking design and the autobots having a more smoother look. What if they change sides? You'll have an evil looking autobot with red eyes and creepy long fingernails. Don't mind it for the movies but just don't like it for the series.

You know, coming to think of it, I don't remember Breakdown having those claw like hands, and his eyes are yellow. So hey, we do have an exception from the rule :p  Who knows, maybe Breakdown was an Autobot before he joined the Cons.

That's my theory on why Bulkhead hates him so much. Breakdown is a former Wrecker that betrayed the team.

I could see that happening. Maybe we'll know more when Wheeljack comes back.

This. All TFs are the same species.

In a biological standpoint, technically, since they can't reproduce, they're not even really a species.

    So the proper answer is:

    1 species.

0 species. Depending on how technical you wish to be.

It is said that the Liege Maximo is the basis of the vast majority of those who would be considered Decepticons; he was big, powerful, and violent. The Liege Maximo was created by Primus to be the "ultimate evil counterforce to good". While Megatronus "the Fallen" Prime became the "Guardian of Darkness" in opposition to Prima's title as the "Guardian of Light" and his face is said to be the inspiration for the Decepticon logo, it is the descendants of the Liege Maximo who are commonly known as "Decepticons".

Think of the Liege Maximo as "Lawful Evil" while the Fallen is "Chaotic Evil".
