    Personally, I've always favored the idea of Grimlock being a war hero who's current state of eloquence is simply the result of brain damage & whatnot. Its rather tragic & not the most kid friendly I'll admit, but I think it brings together the best of both worlds in terms of different fictions, especially if his alt mode is also thought to have been taken as a tribute to the legacy left by the original Dinobot during the Beast Wars instead of just something random or there by necessity.
