It had these re-assembleable vehicles with drills and guns and stuff (and usually had fake treads) and particularily, they had these about half-inch tall figures cast in coloured plastic that you could stick in the cockpit to pilot them.

There really wasn't many ways to re-assemble them, unless you had more than one vehicle of course.

The packaging had a space motive on it while displaying the vehicle? Can you remember if one of the models was a grey with red one that had "arms" in the front part and it even had a small remote that make him go back and forth?
Because I do have few still from that line and they do resemble the ones you are describing but not sure if we are talking about the same toys. I should take picture of the ones I have to clear things. ^^'

I remember a series where the vehicle bodies had friction motors, and the rest was as you describe. Had some little Zoid type pilots too.

Can't remember the line name off hand, but I can picture something. Was a mid-90s thing I think?

I thought those were KOs/bootlegs. Saw them in some small corner shops in the early 90s.

My first thought was Robolinks which was a US release of a Takara toy (I think). It's only fresh in my head because I just sold my set.

    Yeah, early to mid-90's.

Odd thing is, I remember having the same toy TWICE but apart from it having a drillbit and treads and the pilot figurine being cast in solid yellow with articulation similar to those Star Wars Micro Machines/Transformers ones, I remember very little about it.

Could've been a KO - but of what?

I saw something like Zoids/Starriors at Radio Shack that looked interesting, but never got.
I have Starriors which used the Zoids pilots in their robot heads, they also had smaller friction steeds and vehicles
