i vaguely remember an animated dragon movie coming on tv in the late 80's. the dragons had long necks, and hoarded treasure. it was set in a fantasy world with castles and such. i also remember one dying, and getting buried under a bunch of treasure.

i know its a long shot, but does anyone know what movie i am talking about?

Man...I remember an animated dragon film with dragons that had necks that weren't short, hoarded treasure in a world with castles and one died. But no treasure burying...

    Anyways, Flight Of Dragons?

Man, the cover art on that article doesn't do it justice at all. One of the best American-produced animated films ever, right up there w/ Wizards.

i remember it being a little more higher quality animation than that, but that does look familiar.

I remember that. There was a bit where one of the wizards was complaining that science was taking over and magic was getting weak. And isn’t there some part when the guy is fling around on giant 20 sided dice?

I don't know how long it's been since you've seen it, but the dice part lasted about five seconds, and the animation was actually pretty impressive for its time. Like I said, the cover is totally misrepresentative.

The one guy gets his soul 'trapped' in the other dragon, and they have to fight the evil wizard, and there's a 'Last Realm Of Magic' created by the three good wizards, and the main dragon fights the Ogre Of Gormly Keep...I don't know, any of this sound familiar?

I don’t know why but the oddness of that part welded into my brain. But was it 20 sided or just normal 6?

I THINK, but I'm not sure, that it was just 6-sided. But D&D was around in '82, and the game the guy had invented was very similar to D&D, so it could've been...I wish I owned a copy now.

Especially since my wife is watching "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead," and I can't stand absurdism.

The last time I saw it was when it was new so the memory is a bit fuzzy.

The animation for Flight of Dragons (as well as the animation for the Hobbit and the Last Unicorn) was provided by Topcraft Studios in Japan. Most of the employees of Topcraft left to form Studio Ghibli. So honestly, I always thought the animation in those Rankin-Bass movies were great for their time.

I wrote a review for the Flight of Dragons. I thought the movie was pretty good. Not my favorite of the Rankin Bass films, but still pretty cool. Especially the bits where they explain the science behind how Dragons fly and breath fire and so on.

Flight Of The Dragons kicked so much ass. The Last Unicorn is just as awesome if not better.
