One of the general pattern in all previous Transformers series is Autobots and Deceptions firing yellow(or orange) and purple lasers at each other whenever they fight. The only other exception beside the current series is Beast Machines.

Similar to BM, TFA doesn't have the gun fights because the Autobots (and Maximals from BM) aren't as designed-for-combat as the Decepticon (and Vehicons). Instead the good guys rely more on each of their own special weapon(some energy=based, so not) to fight. Many time we see the Autobots hiding behind covers from Decepticons' firepowers.

Anyone misses the good and bad guys firing at each other?

It isn't just GI Joe and Transformers, it is almost all fiction that deals with guns. Stormtroopers, for example.

Bots were hit in the original, but it barely scratched their paint. I think they finally set their phasers on 5 in the '86 movie.

Yeah their guns had a special "Your toy isn't being made anymore" setting in the animated movie.

I personally think the fact that the 'bots all have their signature weapons and attack styles makes them unique. Even the Decepticons who have got more firepower generally have unique attack styles - Megatron's Fusion Cannon, Starscream's Null Rays, Lugnut's brute strength, Blitzwing's fire and ice lasers. It makes things a lot more interesting than each character being another gun on the battlefield.

Yeah, I've gotta say that I'm really not missing the laser guns at all; as far as I'm concerned, ubiquitous laser guns largely make for bland, toothless action scenes. Not only do they leave very little opportunity for interesting fight choreography, they are by their nature overpowered weapons that the show makers have little choice but to neuter for the sake of narrative tension and age appropriateness. Limiting their appearance to special occasions allows writers to be a lot more creative and devise dynamic, character-driven powers and weaponry, and that's what I prefer. Just look at Star Wars: it's packed to the gills with peow-peow laser guns, but the only weapon anyone ever remembers are the cool, imaginative melee weapons.

They make for much more interesting toys, too. :)

Not at all. Standing and shooting = VERY BORING, thus < than Animated action scenes.

I like how DieMaus put it.

It's not that I don't miss it, I just don't really care either way.

I do like how a lot of the characters use melee weapons (Prime's axe, Megatron's swords, Bulkhead's wrecking ball).

It also adds variety to the toys' weapons. I hated with the Armada figures how pretty much the only weapon that anyone had was missiles
