Not trying to rock the boat or anything as I know there’s a lot of gamers round these parts which is cool, but I was just curious to see if there’s anyone else out there who’s felt like they have grown out of video games as they’ve got older.

With me I used to be hardcore into video games as a kid and in my teenage years and early 20’s. Was big into Nintendo/Sega systems, and particularly into computer games, which I played all the time growing up. However as I got older, especially going into my 20’s I found video games just didn’t hold any interest to me anymore, especially console systems. The last console system I actually bought and liked was the N64 with Zelda Ocarina of Time and so forth but since then none of the new systems never really grabbed me. PS2, X-Box, Gamecube, I’ve played them with various games at other peoples places but they never really captured my interest like the old Nintendo and Sega systems did. Nor have I had any interest to drop the cash and or spend the time to bother playing games on newer systems. Now it’s got to the point were video games just don’t do anything for me at all anymore. I will play the odd computer game every now and then (Doom 3, Half Life 2) but other then that I just find myself not into video games the way I used to be like when I was younger.

Anybody else out there have something similar happen when it comes to this?

    No.

In fact, I look forward to the day I have kids so I can kick their ass in Madden 2023.

I don't think I have outgrown them I just think the games aren't as good as they used to be. OK the graphics are better but the games just don't interest me. I remember having so much FUN playing my N64 and sonic. The games now I don't find fun, I find them fustrating maybe because they made them harder? I don't I feel like I am playing games just to beat them so I never have to look at them again.

Actually, video games are my main thing now and the thing that no longer holds my interest are toys.

Kinda the same thing with me; there seems to be more stuff nowadays that I don't care about than when I first got into video games. But I do still find games that are a blast to play.
I do however feel that I've outgrown having enough time to play video games, unfortunately :(

    No.

And if anything, games have gotten easier. You kids don't have any idea how good you have it.

I used to feel that way, but the DS pulled me back in, and the Wii will probably do it moreso.

If anything i'd like to play more then I do now, its just that there arn't many new games being released that I actually want to play.

I still like my games, but as I age, I find that I have much less time. My kids play a lot more than I do.

In fact, I'll be pissing off my kids and playing video games while they do their homework.

Hey S.ca, I'm more or less with you, though by your description, I would imagine that I play games a bit more often than you do. I've just found myself with less time for games in the past several years and probably a shorter attention span for them, I think. The last I really spent any appreciable amount of time on games was probably in 1999 or 2000. Even though I did get an XBOX several years ago, I'll bet that I've probably only put a hundred hours on the thing in total. I'll get into the odd PC game for a few weeks or so, then I'll put it down for months and not even think about it. I seem to go on binges with a couple or few months in between.

Lately, though, I've had this itch to hook up the old NES and start playing Zelda II (I can't believe the cart. still holds game data after 18 years!!)

DOOD! QFT. I've noticed that with each console generation, the games seem to get easier too. Not sure why that is. I have a stack of NES games that I never ever could finish.

I thought I had gotten to the point where I had alot less interest in video games, but I think with me it's just cyclical. Now I can't wait to play a bunch of games, and am excited about alot of stuff that's coming out.

The only reason I'm not playing as much nowadays is that the game industry is basically turning out complete shit at this point. Yeah sure there are a few gems, but even those gems are lackluster compared to the really great games released even just 5 years ago. The worst thing is that the general public is lapping it up without complaint and the future looks forbidding.

I hear ya sw. but here's the deal--I'm just really playing games this winter for the first solid time in about 5 years. over that time, I did indeed pick up a ps2 and an xbox, and games to go with them, but haven't played them. all total though, there's only about 10 games to play that I haven't yet. that 10 seems like a ton to me, but only averages to 1 per year per system. if I was actually playing all that time, I would'a been bored out of my mind. I've been playing metal gear, devil may cry, shadow of colossus, and some other really solid titles. you can't say good stuff like that isn't interesting.

that being said, I'm definitely not going into the next-generation. instead, once all the games are done, there's about 2000 16-bit roms I have that'll keep me busy in all the rest of my days.

Not outgrow, just lose interest due to no good games being released.

    Bingo!

On top of that, 98% of the games released each year are complete and utter crap. If the industry would work on quality instead of quantity, we'd all be winners. For every "Oblivion" or "Twilight Princess", there's hundreds of "shoe store tycoon" and "generic let's blow shit up" games.

Alright, this is kinda funny. I just hooked up my NES and put in Zelda II (got the game in Spring 1988). I seem to recall the instruction booklet stating that the battery backup would last about 5 years, however, the damn thing still has OLD game saves stored in it and all appears to be right with the world. Anyone know what kinda batteries these things used? Or, was it actually some type of non-volatile RAM instead? Could have sworn it was battery backed.

EDIT: Just googled it, and it turns out that it isn't particularly uncommon to have NES Zelda carts with batteries that still function. They use lithium batteries, btw. Still can't believe they still work after all these years.

After 14 months of SWG I had outgrown them until Oblivion came along. Now I am the proud owner of a Xbox360 and am back to gaming a few nights a week.
