The most well-known transforming robots cartoon is TransFormers. The second famous, to me, is Gobots (acquired by Hasbro in 1991) .
In my country (PRC), there is a Robowarriors. and I'm sure it's obscure (not well-made enough) to people live outside China.

Any other well-known cartoon of this genre? especially world-wide ones.

    YouTube -

Think Pokemon combined with Transformers. It's not as bad as it sounds.

Great series when I watched it as a kid and still a joy to watch now.

GAOGAIGAR - THE KING OF BRAVES. Based on observation of the first episode (forgive me, 'tis the only episode I've seen), GaoGaiGar himself is kind of a mix of Power Rangers, Voltron, and, of course, Transformers.

Not really a cartoon but The returner has a transforming ship. At the time a lot of people were saying this was what the , at the time, rumored tf movie would look like. It came pretty close.

Thats what I was going to say :) !!!

More like Medabots with combining/transforming robots. No 'collect em all' here. Also maybe Web Diver (the predecessor to Daigunder).

Part of the Brave series as Rizuan mentioned :) .

Theres also Eldoran though they tend to partsform more or less.

    - Medarot 2nd season, many of them had another mode (yeah! metabee! transform! xD) (oh yeah, and Medarot3-4 from the GBC games)
    - Dinosaurs/Dino Zone/DinoZaurs, transforming dinosaurs fossils!, I remember when many KO of those were sold in some places and their bubble card had written BEAST WARS xD (ok,no, it was a chinese name, but there were many pictures of Primal, Cheetor and Megatron)
I don't remember any other xD but in this city, MANY KO of different toys were sold as transformers, I sorta remember a winged truck, but I dunno if it was from a cartoon or just a toy-only figure xD

That pic makes Captain Shark look even MORE epic than he does in the series itself! I approve!!!

Oh add another one. Bomberman B-Daman Bakugaiden IV and V. IV has some ciombining robots but V has transforming AND combining robots :) .

Rocklords is technically part of Gobots (and is also in the Machine robo anime as the rock tribe).

I think the big ones, Macross and Brave, have been suitably covered. I would have to say, whatever your definition of robots, that most people you would ask for the three most memorable would probably say Transformers, Robotech and Power Rangers. I'm well aware that Power Rangers is live action and not a cartoon, but even so, those would be the three I'd say are most in the public consciousness.

MASK didn't have robots, but the vehicles did kind of Transform, in a stealth-force kind of way. The show attracted some of the same crowd during the TF era though.

Again, not really a cartoon, but an amazing puppet show, STAR FLEET had one of the first combiners, Dai-X. The combining sequence still sends shivers down my spine just thinking of it.
