I'm probably going to get a new laptop in the near future and I wanted to get some advice on what kind of software I should get for the new computer to prevent viruses etc. I have used Norton in the past but I hear a lot of people don't like it.

    What do you use/recommend?

Also, please keep in mind that I'm pretty stupid when it comes to computers. For example, when people talk about firewalls is this just a security setting on my computer or is there such a thing as "firewall" software out there?

Thanks in advance for your help! (And thanks for putting up w/ a computer novice like me!)

For AV, I DO like Norton's, but it IS pretty invasive itself, and resource intensive. Lighter alternatives are Free AVG or Kapersky.

AVG is up to version 9 and is suppose to be pretty good.
Avast have recently released version 5 which is less resource hungry and a far better interface that the previous version.
Microsoft's Security Essentials have also been said to be a very good Anti-Virus program

One of the above should be suffice for virus protection needs.

That article was written in 2008, so the results may have changed.
Windows comes with a built in Firewall which should suffice and there is probably one on your router/modem as well.

I'll say Avast, if you're looking for something that's free. ;)

What about windows malicious software removal tool? Go to start menu, Run, and type "mrt" and up it pops.

I was under the impression that it's a pretty decent tool.
