Being sick the past couple of days gave me the opportunity to see how horrible the acting is on these shows. I'm surprised some lasted as long as they did.

Is it bad that I am happy to hear these soap operas are being canceled? Unfortunately, that just means more money that will be funneled into cheap, crappy reality shows. They'll probably show infomercials during the time slots for these soap operas to generate more revenue.

They could always do updates of classic game shows. I'd love to see a new Press Your Luck... love those Whammies!

They got a new version of Let's Make a Deal. It looks ok.

The sales of bon-bons will likely suffer as well.

I'd personally rather see a revival of the Newlywed Game.

Yes, let's all be happy that staples of American tv and cultural history have been cancelled because they aren't cartoons, super-heroes, or giant fucking robots. My mother and grandmother are crushed btw, they been watching ATWT forever.

Most women I know who WERE into soaps have honestly jumped on the reality tv badwagon for some reason. So, I don't know anyone crazy about these anymore and I guess I'm not shocked to hear some getting cancelled.

Great. more Dr. Phil/Rachel Ray/Ellen, Dr. Oz and other insipid time killers.

I am kinda sad to see these shows fade. here's why:

1.) nostalgia. I grew up watching Y&R, Search for Tomorrow, ATWT, and Guiding Light with my grandparents, watched it on sick days from school, holidays, etc. it's just something we did together.

2.) Institutions- Guiding light was over 70 years old when it was cancelled. ATWT is 54. and unlike Prime time, these shows were staged and recorded DAILY. They are the marathons of television.

3.) Actors/Writers. Some of the acting is bad to a painful degree, but some-most is fairly decent. and damn, they write and perform new scripts DAILY. Not 13 or 26 for a Series' season. They get weekends and the big holidays, but they put in the hours for the show.
I have a lot of respect for that kind of work ethic.

I don't know if "Desperate Housewives" is considered a soap opera, but the network is killing off several characters just to cut cost.

Shows how much TV I seem to watch. I didn't even know the show was still on.
