Right this year I'm head of screenings in my local anime society. This means I have to put on weekly screenings of ovas, series, movies and such for members. I know a huge variety of anime series, but other than Studio Ghibli films and a few others (Paprika, Perfect Blue, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D, Blood) I'm not so knowledgable on movies. Can anyone suggest me anything good thats worth showing?

Oh, and I'm talking about standalone films, not films based on series and such.

    Thanks :)

    Jin-Roh.

The Patlabor and Macross movies work by themselves without having seen the series or OVAs they are based on.

I vote Jin-Roh as well, it's a great film regardless of the anime "genre."

Just looked into Jin-Roh, that sounds awesome! Definitely going to shortlist that. As for Macross, a friend wants me show some of Macross Frontier so I'll more than likely be showing that rather than the movies.

We played that last year, wasn't a bad film but the turnout for it wasn't great if I remember rightly, could try it again sometime I guess.

Street Fighter II is awesome! I can't believe I forgot about that, its one of my favourite anime movies :D

Anyways thanks all of you for the suggestions :)

Good gawd no, DYRL and Plus are masterworks of the real robot genre and are among he animation highlights of thier respective decades.

Not that i'm saying that Frontier is all bad, but its certainly no substitute. Not to mention that theres a movie version of it coming out in November, which might be better for your plans then showing some odds and ends of the TV series.

    Definitely showing that :)

Personally I didnt enjoy Plus when I saw it, but then again I watched it during a long bus trip. It demands a second viewing from me. Not seen DYRL.

As for Frontier I didnt realise there was a movie coming out, and yeah thats probably easier for me than showing the first few episodes. Thanks for the info!

Here are a few of my favourites:
    Appleseed
    Applesee:Ex Machina
    Vexille
    Iria
    You're Under Arrest: The movie
    Burn Up
Armitage III Dual Matrix (Although there is an OVA series before it, I think it's works alright as a stand alone movie)

And depending on the ages of your attending members:
    Mezzo Forte (Edited version)
    Kite (Edited version)

[EDIT] Also, depending on when you're viewing starts (and if you're allowed to use fansubs) - the Kara no Kyoukai movie series is a definate watch. Six of the movies have been subbed already, with the 7th only recently screened in Japan.

I have to echo the recommendations for DYRL and Plus. If you didn't like Plus, at least give DYRL a try. WAY better then Frontier.

Gotta also say Jin-Roh, one of my all time favorites. Metropolis was a good one as well. Spriggan's good if you want something like an old Arnold movie.

Thanks RabidYak, now I want to watch DYRL and Plus. <_<
