Alright guys, here is my practice piece. I called it my practice piece because of just that, it was my first time dyeing a figure and adding a wash, AND using Future Floor Finish!....whew...that was a lot of practicing!...:lol

Anyways, onto the custom. I have to thank REDLINE for sharing the "hot glue" trick he learned from Ramrider, and again to REDLINE and Nemesis Predaking for the help on the name, they both gave me awesome sounding names, so I put them both together for what I call:

    Animated - Sunder of Solaris

    [att]7538[/att]

    [att]7539[/att]

    [att]7540[/att]

    [att]7541[/att]

    [att]7545[/att]

    [att]7546[/att]

    [att]7542[/att]

    [att]7543[/att]

    [att]7544[/att]

That's right, there is not one lick of Black paint on this custom! Its all Ritz dye, and the awesome shine is courtesy of Future Floor Finish!...I am truly amazed by the outcome on just these two endeavors!!

I still need to do some practicing on my wash technique, but overall I am very happy with the outcome....

    Tips and crits welcomed!!

Man, this piece has really turned out sweet! I love the wash you gave him. You did just enough to bring out some details and you didn't overwork it. Everything looks stellar :thumb

I'd also like to comment on how well you've presented your piece. I think your lighting could use some tweaks (actually Photoshop or another photo editor like Picassa could help), but you've really stepped up your game in this area of your work as well.

    Excellent work man :thumb

Thanks a lot guys....I really appreciate the compliments and helpful crits, especially coming from "Heavy Hitters" such as you guys....:D

As far as the pics...it was kinda bright in the whole room....maybe I should have waited until it was a wee bit darker outside to take them...

And NP, as far as the wing mod....'twas simple!

I just cut them off at the seam line where they meet the body of the jet, swapped them from left to right, added some Styrene rod pins for stability, and just glued them back on with Devcon Plastic Weld....easy peasy :thumb

So glad you've finally posted this baby! He's really sexy. Sinister as heck lookin', and the best part is the new angle on the wings makes him look a lot faster too! I wouldn't wanna tangle with him, I know I'd be shouting S.O.S. :lol

Basically you drill out the eyes (unless there's already a removeable plastic insert - there seems to be quite a few figs lately with clear plastic eyes but no opening in the head to let light through :p ), and cut out a portion of the back of the head, so that light can enter the back of the head and exit through the eyes. It's a lot easier if it's a head that separates into a front and back half, but not impossible otherwise.

Then you take a hot glue gun and pump glue into the back of the face so it fills up the eyes, and into the back of the head, basically filling up the space you cut out.
When hot glue cools, it sets into a solid, but fairly flexible translucent lump, so light will travel through it. Once it's set you can trim and file it to shape, put the head back together and you've got yourself homemade light piping, which you can paint with clear paint or glass stain to tint it.

Brilliant job, PK! Great that the dye took so well, and the paint wash gives a real Fallen look to him. The wing mod looks really cool, too - in fact is it just me, or does his jet mode now look an awful lot like an Armada Seeker?

Now how about a couple of shots to show Mega-Prime how the hot glue looks lit from behind? ;)

Wild looking custom mang, have fun with the wash - sky's the limit ! (well maybe your wallet is LOL)
Maybe try a lighter colored fig with a dark wash for the next...those are always fun...you'll see
