But the upshot is WSF with all its joint-building tough-as-nails nylon goodness is now available in a smooth/polished finish, so no more "do I have to sand it?" complaints! :)

The tester feedback so far sounds amazing:

SOOO excited, can't wait to try this out!

The Ultra Frosted Detail also sounds great, and I already have prints coming in that material and will report in once I get them.

yeah I've had 2 orders on backorder for forever now. They're totally swamped, but in the end that is a GOOD thing, modo business will drive prices down and cause them to increase capacity, it's kind of great that they're having gorwing pains, though it sucks in the short term...

Reading up on the material, I have doubts it will work for model kits with moving parts, like ball joints. Mostly because, from the way they polish it, it seems to take layers off the surface. Also, from the samples they show, I have a feeling it will really smooth out hard edges on your designs. Thats just my thoughts. I'm curious to see some of the shapeways users post photos of this new material for their models. :)

You know you need an extra set of Null Rays. Everyone does. ;)

I'm really excited to try this, I've been holding off buying stuff for a while and this gives me a good excuse to spend! :)

I doubt anyone would have any WSF Polished stuff yet, so aside from SW's pics, no, the probably aren't any.

My main concern is whether the material will remain porous, though, as part of WSF's main strengths was that paint could actually get inside it, making paint rub no issue at all. I just wonder if that will hold true for WSF Polished.

Oops. My bad. I haven't seen any pics yet, I'd assume they haven't arrived. Either that or people are just too busy to pick up a camera.

I do agree with Venksta, though. Running ball joints on many of my deistic, the standard is a 0 tolerance, to get enough friction, and even that sometimes gets loose. Put it in a tumbler, you're just asking for bits to be chipped off, and hence the ball would get smaller.

    could you compensate for that?

i bet not since there is no way ofknowing if it would take the same amount off each time1

Thanks napjr. Any chance of seeing some alt mode pics?

Megatron, you're right, there is no way to compensate for it, due to the massive amount of uncertainty involved in the tumbling.
