Maybe I've got too much free time on my hands; maybe not, who can say, but earlier today while re-reading all of my BW Tech Specs I got to thinking about the Ranks of the characters, I mean what does Rank mean? And then I thought to myself; what if Rank refers to the social status of that soldier? Which could open up a ton of thoughts; I mean comparing the Maximal Ranks to the Predacons Ranks you'll notice a few major things for instance... Cheetor originally held a Rank of 6 in his first body; as the Beast Wars in the Tech Specs went on he upgraded to a Rank 7 as a Transmetal and a Rank 7.1 as a Transmetal Two. On the Flipside Waspinator and Terrorsaur both started with Rank 6, but when they went Transmetal they were reduced in Rank by one becoming Rank 5, which to me says that Megatron; tired of their incompetence demoted them. Another interesting thought surrounds the ranks held by characters with the Infantry function; on the Maximal side Infantry is well respected apparently, Wolfang holds the Rank of 5 and has the Infantry function, while Razorbeast strangely enough holding the same function of Infantry actually has a Rank of 5.6 On the Predacon side; Powerpinch and Drill Bit are both Infantry units, and yet Powerpinch holds a lowly Rank of 2 while Drill Bit supposedly his equal holds Rank 4. Obviously both Powerpinch and Drill Bit aren't very high up in the Predacon Scocial Ladder. Other interesting little tidbits include Scorponok the Predacon's Desert Attack Commander; if we are to believe that Rank's indicate Social Order for the Predacons you would think that anyone with Commander in their title would hold a Rank of at least 7 or higher, but no. Scorponok is a mere Rank 6; his Desert Troops, which basically consist of Desert Combat Expert Quickstrike and Desert Demolition unit Retrax are closer to rank with their Commander as opposed to some others, and in the case of Retrax, well Retrax has the Rank of 7 and Quickstrike equals Scorponok with a Rank of 6. Going back to Predacons who were demoted in Ranks during the events depicted in the Tech Specs; notice Spittor and Iguanus; originally Spittor the Surprise Attack Unit held a Rank of 6, when he went Transmetal Two once again there was a demotion to Rank 5. Iguanus the Demolitions expert; or at least one of them, held Rank 5, when he went Transmetal Two he may have gained a new Function in the form of Artillery Expert, but he was demoted by .5 becoming Rank 4.5. Also notice; none of the Maximals held a Rank of 3 and only Snarl held Rank 2, coincidentaly his Function was the same as Spittor Surprise Attack. That tells me that the Maximals might not hold as high a regard for certain special functions as the Predacons do; I mean their Infantry is at least medium level Rank while the Predacons consider Infantry to be weak and rank them accordingly. Even with Black Arachnia there was a demotion in Rank from Rank 6 as a Predacon to Rank 5 as a Maximal; guess she had to earn the trust and respect to maintain her original Rank. Of course there's two Beast Wars characters who confuse me slightly, but if we are to consider the Rank listing of the Tech Spec as the Social Status of the unit in question then really the only logical reason for a Rank 10+ to exist in the first place is if the Military-Like Ranking system the Maximals and Predacons use can only go so high; thus if a character such as Supreme Maximal Commander Optimal Optimus or Universal Overlord Shokaract hold said Rank then it can stand to reason that Optimal Optimus is Rank 10+ because he's broken the mold as it were socially speaking and Shokaract of course is an Egomanianc of the highest order with the Matrix of Conquest to back him up, of course he's going to assume the Rank of 10+. Anyway I think I've rambled on enough; I just wanted to see if I could start an interesting topic of conversation surrounding the Beast Wars, so I'll leave you to ponder my perhaps strange musings for now and proceed to return to the realm of obscurity while I do something else and maybe discover another interesting topic that I can try my hand at.
