building this model kit into an alternator.

    Tamiya 1/24 scale Subaru Alcyone
it's the car I drive to work everyday
known as XT in the states.

looking for help and source for cheap alternators
    (knock offs?)

want ot either use the windcharger style model and build it as a vert
    or the prowl model maybe

    looking for suggestions
the character is still up in the air as well
model will be flat black like my car.

may use "Sorrow Six Star" who is a character from tokyo Xtreme racer 3
    who drives this car.

anyway it's my first custom transformer. (I do real car stuff a bit though, and model kits)
    looking for advice!

neat idea!! i would suggest trying to use one of the dodge viper molds(sunstreaker/deadend/decepticharge) because that mold is the most "flat" when stripped of it's body panels.can't wait to see what you end up doin:wink:

the ultimate autobot would be turbocharged and AWD.

    after looking at my alternators:
    which include
    windcharger
    ricochet
    prowl
    tracks
    sunstreaker
    shockwave
the viper mold is way too wide....
the wheel base on the acura and honda are closer.
but they have body panels as limbs/parts of limbs in robot mode.
the other subaru is closest to matching over all depsite the longer wheelbase

I would think the windcharger mold would be the best fit. it's just as flat as the viper mold, or least pretty close.
    Good luck!

Looking at your car, I'd say use the Acura/Prowl mold. The S2000 may be a good choice, but being that this is your first time, I would start with a car that had a more structural resemblance to the kit I wanted to use.

The S2000 doesn't have a permanently attached roof. Your kit does....just like the Acura. The Acura is also easier to transform....I mean, its really pretty basic. Do the leg mod to the Acura, and then the trunk area, and back part of the glass (from the door back) is now the front of the legs, making the glass/roof area the feet for the bot.

Using a knock-off Alt for parts would work. But using that as the basis for your reshell might not be the best thing to do. While the KO Acura TF is a good KO, hell, its one of the best KO alts out there IMO....but its still a KO. Don't start off cheap. Everything works and fits better on a real Alt over a KO version....thats not something you wanna sacrifice on a project like this.

People I can think of off the top of my head that have done them:

Lobo, Wikkid, Wheel Jack, ALPHAMAGNUS, Jarrod, Encline....there may be more, I just can't think of any others right now....(if I left someones name off the list, I do apologize)

Maybe do an "Advanced Search" here in Radicons for threads started by these members listed above to get you going and maybe give you a better idea of whats ahead.

A reshell isn't easy, but it isn't really hard either...it just takes time....a lot of patience and a lot of planning. Measure twice, sometime 3 or 4 times, cut once.

Envision how you want your custom to look first, and then get cracking at making it

Keep us posted on your progress

    thanks a bunch plowking.

I have been through the gallery and seen lots of these.

I was hoping on using prowl too,... it's a heavy figure that's pretty rigid
the problem with it is is the proportions...

I'm still looking at my toys and deciding what I want to deal with.

edit- I looked at your customs. very nice dude!

    ... Oh my freaking God.

I owned two of these cars. Two. And I've never known another human being who would admit to owning one. I loved it so much that, after putting the first one through a telephone pole and several trees, I had to go get an emergency backup XT. First one was a straight XT, second was an XT-6 with the simply ludicrous air suspension and V-6 under the hood (why a car that weighed maybe 14 pounds, 12 of which were conveniently pre-rotted body panels, with the other two being those incredible control pods behind the steering wheel) needed a 6 cylinder, I will never know. Make this, and make it now.

I'd use either the Acura or Mazda Alternators for your base. In terms of overall proportions, I'd think the Mazda would be a better fit, given how low-slung the XT was. Alternately, you might want to use a pile of moist paper-maiche that you've set on fire, since that's what the original car was mostly made from.

    I love you.

What is it about the proportions that throw it off for you?.....some things can be modified or relocated....like the wheels....I had to do that on my Alt Jeep reshell using Alt Prowl.

after taking the time to take a few snaps I realised you're tight PK the Integra is the best mold for the job the rear wheels will have to be moved in a bit or a gap left and filled in the rear panel.... but the best part is the windshield can be retained because it's the same slope as the subaru.

    my alts....

Yeah, I'd say run with that Acura. If you need an extra, I believe Optimus Scourge has one in his sale thread in the Junkion.....if its still there that is....

Get the front wheels centered in the opening in the front of the car....as you said, the back wheels can be relocated....and are much easier to do than relocating the front wheels.

Nice! Or go for a KO Intergra mold. Since you're going to be a number on it, why not save a bit while you're at it! :D
GenZhao has his KO Toys sale somewhere on tfw2005, but here's a site for you for some KO Alts/BTs. Alternators & Binaltech at KOTOYS.COM

    Good luck, dude!

I was looking and Ebay can provide me a used REAL prowl for less than some of the KOs... (at the same time the Chinese police prowl knock off looks like it needs to be in my collection yesterday.)

thanks for the tip on the sale thread going to look now!
