Are they both must haves, or is one better than the other? Both are hovering around $40-$50+ and I'd prefer to only pick up one... unless they are both that great.

I never got into the Alternators line, but fell for Mirage when I first saw him. Then the kiss player Rod and the SDCCcame out and I just couldn't decide. The Ford GT is just uber hot though! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Go with Mirage first. I favor the racing stripes and real world deco.

SDCC Rod is different enough. The mold is the same but the flame deco is different and he's got a different head with a visor.

Kiss Rod is a mix of the two. Red but with racing stripes. He costs a lot more though.

It's a kickass car with a nice 'bot mode, so I'd recommend picking up both if you can swing it. The eHobby clear version of Mirage is also nice, though expensive so probably more of a luxury item unless you really fall in love with it. Mirage is my favorite out of the bunch for the color of blue they used on the Alternators release.

Thanks for the feedback, one more question though. Is one or the other (SDCC or Mirage, no chance I can swing Kiss Rod) better in bot mode or alt mode? Or am I pretty much buying it for the alt mode only?

I liked Mirage initially because of his alt mode, but also his bot mode (colors as well as design) looked great to me too. Then when I saw Rodimus' bot mode it really made the decision harder.

Any thoughts? Also, how does the paint hold up on the two? Same, or one better than the other?

a board member here is selling mirage for $30. his name's fujikuro. Bought some binaltechs off him and transaction was smooth.

I think hotrod looks ugly so I stuck to mirage

    I have both, love both.

Mirage is a cooler looking toy I think.

I think it really comes down to: Which character do you prefer?

Personally, I like the 'bot mode, moreso than some of the other Alternators molds. Decent posability, satisfactory transformation (not simple, not complex or a pain like Alternators Grimlock/Wheeljack), and a nice design...the only thing I don't like about the toy are his teeny tiny weapons.

Just make sure if you happen to get a Mirage MISB that it doesn't have a glued hinge that folds into the chest. I got mine well after the release (probably 5 years) and it had this issue, and I snapped the hinge in transformation. Apparently it was a pretty common problem that I would have known had I gotten it at retail and followed Transformers back then.

If you have extra cash I'd highly suggest the BT Electro-disruptor Rijie. He is just an amazing piece to own.

mirage, the racing stripes look better than the flames, but if you get rodimus, make sure you have a version of the cybertron swerve mold, the pipes go on his arms nicely without any modification

I LOVE the mold, but my favorite version is the SDCC rodimus. I love the flame deco, the red color of the car, and the bot mode. It's got a really great head sculpt. I'd get both, if you can, but dang that Rodimus is cool.

Hot Rod is definitely there to be seen. Bot mode for Mirage is cleaner. But I guess that makes sense.

If you decide to do the pipes for Hot Rod the Cybertron or TFTM Clocker should be eaiser to find then Swerve.

I know SDCC Rodimus was KO'd...not sure about Mirage (but most likely it was too?).

    Something to consider.

Thanks for all of the responses guys.

I must admit that I am leaning towards the SDCC Rod, but I keep coming back to Mirage since he was the one I saw first. I am a bigger fan of Hot Rod over Mirage as far as their character goes and I think that is why I am leaning towards him. I just feel that if I buy Mirage and like him that much, I'll just end up picking up the SDCC Rod as well.

Does anyone have pics or a link to pics of the pipes on Hot Rod from Swerve or Clocker? This might help to push me over the edge.

I have all of them....out of them, I prefer the BT-18 Rije (clear Mirage....I'm a sucker for clear toys)

It all boils down to your tastes....Out of the "Hot Rods" I prefer the KP version....the stripes look way better than the flame deco.

If you do go with the SDCC version Hot Rod, make sure you look at this:

Video - TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting

Protoman took the time to make a video of "how to tell the KO" from the real deal....very enlightening.

Also, Pascal found this site here:

    http://famitoy.blogspot.com/2008/10/fake-toy-review-alternators-hot-rodimus.html

Even more info on how to tell the difference between the two.
