Sorry if this figure is common, or has already been discussed. Tried the search feature, and got nothing. I don't follow the current stuff very closely.

A trip to Kmart with my son today had me browsing through some Animated, and Universe stuff. While looking through the Universe figs, I came across an all-black Sideswipe. There were about 6-7 other normal red Sideswipes, some Ironhides, and a Galvatron.

I bought the black Sideswipe, and a red one for comparison. Everything looks the same, with the obvious exception being everything is black on it????


Does anyone have any info on this toy?

Prototype maybe? This is the first I've ever heard of a black colored Sideswipe.

Opened him up for pics. The texture of the material feels like my hardcopy movie Scorponok. It is very tight in some area's, and floppy on others....also like a hardcopy.
















The gun is different, and the roof piece does not even fit???

 

ill stick my neck out and say thats some sort of custom dye job gone wrong but somehow returned to store?

 

If this is how they looked when you first bought them, before opening - I notice that the black one does not have twist-ties and the engine section looks like it's loose in the blister.

I think it's a failed custom figure, that the owner re-glued to the card and returned. Some areas could be tight from the repainting and other areas could be loose from where the person disassembled it and put it together again roughly. Otherwise, it's really late in the game to see an error or mock-up Sideswipe slip through the cracks - if this guy appeared when Sideswipe's Wave first dropped, I might have a different opinion.

Yeah, looks like a failed custom that someone returned to the store.

 

You know what that honestly looks like to me? It looks like someone bought one, tried to dye it black, failed and melted the heck out of it, then re-packed it and returned it.

The plastic looks warped in exactly the way I've had happen when I've screwed up dye-jobs for kitbashes.... and the rims of the wheels look look dyed as well (silver paint + black dye).

I think someone was being a jerk.   Too bad, as I would love if there were some black chase Sideswipes floating around out there.

EDIT: Oops, beaten by Cyberjet and Laser_Optimus. But yeah, my bet is on failed custom. So you know you have at least one jerk kitbasher living in your area.
