Can you really call her a pretender?

She was more like a Beast Wars era techno organic thing.

It seems like the term pretender was used incorrectly.

No, she isn't technically a Pretender, seeing as she didn't utilize any kind of shell, but rather used onboard technology to produce a human disguise. So, she has a human alt-mode you could say, which makes her one of only two Transformers with human alt-modes, the other being Sari.

    Yes. She is a pretender.

She even says the line "How about I PRETEND to be your girlfriend, and you PRETEND to be my boyfriend."

Whether she's a pretender or not, the human-organic alt form is something that should be expanded upon in the future.

She had a human alt mode, which makes her a Pretender. The term "Pretender" means someone that pretends to be something that he/she is not. And she wasn't a human. There are 2 explanations for this:

    1. She maybe used a shell, which folded into the robot, like nanotechnology. Kind of like an advanced shell former which puts its shell within the robot mode.

    OR

    2. Cybertronian technology evolved from G1, guys. They don't need shells anymore, and that could just be an alt mode like any other.

Either way, by the definition I gave above, she WAS a Pretender.

    Fixed.

Though in Transformers canon, the term "Pretender" is a more specific term than just "someone that pretends to be something that he/she is not". By you definition all Transformers are Pretenders.

When people are debating if Alice was a true Pretender, the definition in question would be a Transformer that disguises its robotic form through the use of a synthetic organic outer shell, in addition to having a standard alt mode.

By this definition, it would seem that Alice was not a Pretender as they have previously appeared in TF canon. From what we saw in the movie, Alice's alt mode was a human, and she did not transform into anything else.

More accurately, Alice could be described as a concept inspired by the G1 Pretenders sub-line, and a new interpretation of a Pretender.

Was Alice even a pretender in the technorganic sense? Wasn't it said that a scene was cut in which Leo saw a TV report on an Alice in Wonderland animatronic that looked shockingly much like Alice?

She didn't really do much transforming to go from human to robot form. She just sort of fragmented and tucked away her organic disguise. That sounds more like a Pretender than a Beast Wars-esque organic mode. She may have had a real alt. mode, some sort of cybertronian go-kart or something, but it was never shown.

She didn't shout "SUIT ON!" or "PRETENDER!", so no.
