Anyone here read one of Manga's greatest achievements? i do, one of my fave graphic novels for a long time and even have some of the colored Marvel Epic issues i collected as a teen.

It's much different than the anime movie that is the most well known of them all as it tells the story in a bigger more epic way even with some characters that never made it in the anime.

Akira is one of the great creative landmarks of comics IMO, Otomo is an incredible visual storyteller and i'd have trouble naming many other works as sucessful at making serious social comment in such a seamlessly entertaining way.

Oh yes. It's been a long while since I've read the manga, probably a few years st least, but it totally blew the anime out of the water in terms of storytelling and visuals. so much so that I can't sit through the entire movie anymore.

may need to repurchase the trades. I used to have the 6 volume Dark Horse set, but I see that some other company is releasing them...

The saddest part of Akira is how poorly it was adapted to the screen. The manga series has amazing art and storytelling.

I'm surprised no one brought up Akira before! Truly a masterpiece of graphic fiction!

If you liked Akira, get Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind from Miyazaki.

My local Boarders is closing down, I might see if they have Akira or Ghost in the Shell or Appleseed. 20% off at least.

I have most of the Marvel/Epic run. I still look around from time to time to try and finish it off. Perhaps I should look into getting the collections.
