This commission of Ratchet and Wheeljack shows our resident G1 bots enjoying some down time... and a few rounds of energon. Piece commissioned by CathUK from the DeviantART boards. Had fun with this piece and tried to do something different with the background. Initially, there was this weird, alluminum thing in the ceiling, but I decided to open it up and show the sky, give it a more expansive feeling. Here are CathUK's thoughts on the image: With Ratchet and Wheeljack I wanted to see a picture of them that emphasised the old friends aspect of the two characters, rather than putting them in their usual setting of the med bay or the lab post/pre-explosion. So the idea was to get a downtime scene, two VERY old friends chatting over drinks, Wheeljack gesturing madly about something and Ratchet listening without commenting on the outcome of previous mad ideas; that or the two of them reminiscing about a funny incident in their past. In my head there's a touch of the Booster Gold and Blue Beetle dynamic to the two of them - virtual cookies for anyone who guesses which one's which. Drop your thoughts! That's a tough call. Wheeljack's plans don't always go as planned, in fact they can be disastrous which is much like Booster, but Ted is an inventor which is also Wheeljack's territory.
I love everything about this, except one thing, I might seem ridiculous for noting this though but, since Wheeljack has no mouth or face really he can't express any emotion except in his eyes. His eyes are pretty much just open though, and to me it looks like he has this blank stare at something "off camera" so to speak, I don't know maybe try to get him to be doing something with his eyes. Just a suggestion everything else is amazing, keep it up!
I had to admit, I when I read this..because I wondered if Wheeljack's drink should have a straw or a hydraulic tube of some sort I love the background, especially the sky..I get the feeling of dusk and it's Energon time..to wind down, laugh about the stupid bots you work with and just relax. I also like Ratchet's expression..he just looks happy to be there and have a little pick me up.
This is a really nice peice, and I totally dig it. However I do agree with CryoPrime. Maybe giving Wheeljack a slight head tilt, or maybe a different hand gesture might help give him some personality. Regardless, you did a really good job on this.
