News from A3U
saw that coming after the notice to GIJoe customizers that went out yesterday.
NO! I want the Gong An Prowl!
Shitty. I'll still get a Sunstreaker from somewhere, though.
They are going after customers now? WTF?
They're going after customizers who customize for the sole purpose of reselling them.
I can understand Hasbro going after bootleg G1 toys, since those bootleg companies are businesses which make money off of toolings owned by Hasbro and Takara, and isn't it amazing that toolings Hasbro and Takara (claim) they don't have are somehow in the hands of bootleggers.
Didn't they also say we can't use their trademarked names when selling customs anymore? Like you can't sell 'custom Major Bludd' or 'custom pimp daddy Destro'.
Theoretically they can't do jack if you happen to be selling a custom of a trademark they don't own. Like Octane.
They state they encourage customizations.. but not to use their card art or anything copywrite or something to that effect..
I'm assuming it's because some customizers are creating their own card arts to package their customized and non-carded figures to have the same 25th anniversary theme for resell?...but using the GIJOE logo and the actual art is a no no..
More info here:
Telling A3AU not to sell them won't do any good. If they really want to stop it, they need to go after the source.
If they make it, I will find it.
If they build it, MMM will come
They're probably contacting other US-based stores as well with the same request, and we just haven't heard about it.
But stopping it at the source, particularly if the bootleggers are overseas, is quite likely out of Hasbro's hands.
I'm glad to see Metrotitan is still there, as I preordered him. But maybe since he's a Takara character, they don't care about that particular KO?
What's interesting is that Kiddi Toys, the manufacturer of those poorly-made G1 combiner knockoffs, made the recent Metroplex knockoff. Well, if I needed another reason to avoid that particular bootleg.
What's also interesting is that last we heard in 2003, Hasbro/Takara still had the Metroplex toolings in their possession, but now it appears to be in the hands of bootleggers.
So, if anybody is wondering why TakaraTomy never reissued this or that character...
It's still made from a tooling owned by Hasbro and Takaratomy. I don't see bootleggers going to the trouble and expense of reverse engineering a toy to the detail and quality level we've seen in the recent G1 replicas, since it would cost them a quite alot of money, so I reckon all of the high-quality bootlegs made recently are unauthorised copies of the original toolings, or toolings that have gone 'missing'.
Although, cutting off the easy local supply of these here in North America is only going to jack up the price here. Any more of a price increase and most people would just say forget it. Actually, most people already say forget it due to the price. I am sure this is Hasbro's ultimate intention. They can't stop China from making and selling them but they can cut off the hands(resellers) that feed them.
Crap and all I really needed was Snarl and my KO dinobots would be complete. Dammit. This sucks. At least I got Grimlock.
I was wondering the same. Was surprised to hear about them targeting individual Joe customizers and not the organized TF KOs. Guess it was only a matter of time before the other shoe/'boot' dropped.
It's funny. Just the other day in the insecticon KO thread I mentioned that I quit buying from a3u due to their enthusiastic support of KOs, and today I was kinda irritated when I saw an email from them but read it anyway to find this. If they stop selling the KO BS, I'll consider buying from them again.
Spence how's that going to effect the release of KO Metrotitan? You said they requested that they asked you to remove them "for the time being".
i'll find a KO wheeljack somewhere...
And what about preordered Sunstreaker and Wheeljack?
Dude! I HAVE to get that Metrotitan.
I got my rantings about KOs done in the Insecticon thread. That being said...
I think Hasbro going after the retailers and the manufacturers is the way to go, as opposed to just one or the other. Both entities feed off each other and unless both are stopped there won't be any way to get rid of KOs for good.
