I have a good question. How much of this is considered "canon" by Hasbro? I mean besides the godawful origin of Unicron in Call of the Primitives that they would probably never consider part of the overall continuity, but what stuff from the original cartoon do they accept as part of the overall tf story?

I'd wager a large portion of it. Its the basis point for everything else that's considered canon.

There are so many continuity issues with G1 that I'd venture to guess only the most basic elements would be considered canon. Even the mythology changes depending on what incarnation you're into.
