I bought an AFA item on eBay, and for the life of me, I can't open the case. Do AFA boxes open? Do I break the plastic with a hammer? Any help?

I'm certainly no expert, but I don't think that your supposed to open things graded by the AFA...if I remember correctly, people AFA things to state the value of that toy. I don't care much for it, but toys are for enjoying, and if that's how someone enjoys it, so be it.

Just curious, but what figure is it?

Action Figure Authority, I believe. They grade MISB toys that are in good shape and you can get a buttload of money from selling them. The end.

I just recently opened an AFA case, I used a Dremel to cut one end off. I wouldn't recommend cracking/hitting the case to break it open, the plastic shatters, so there's a high likelihood of damaging the box/window, bubble/card.

Incidentally, kudos man for breaking them out!

Just curious but why buy a sealed graded item just to open? Why not safe the $$$ and buy a non AFA item.

Very true. The purpose of AFA grading is to have a toy maintain it's status essentially forever. That way it will always retain its value and in fact, increase its value to other MISB collectors. That's why there's an AFA, because for MISB C10+ people can get it graded and increase it's value, then sell it later for a small fortune to someone who wants a figure that's MISB that's never been touched to be a part of their MISB collection.

If you're an opener, always, always go for a non-AFA graded figure, unless due to some bizarre circumstance, it's far cheaper on eBay or whatever. Heck, for a while, there were ads to get people to AFA grade their MISB figures, with ads in Toyfare like, "MISB Optimus, $100, AFA 100 MISB Optimus $450" or whatever.

Lastly, AFA graded products aren't meant to be opened, ever. If it were possible to open it and reseal it, the entire system would be useless, as you could get a high quality figure AFA graded to a high value, then swap it for a worse piece.

I echo these words. If you wanted a figure to open you could have saved a bunch of money by not buying one that was AFA graded.

It would be interesting to send a figure to AFA, have it graded, open the AFA case, resubmit it, and have it graded several more times.

I wonder if the figure would receive different grades for any of the submissions?

    Ebay:
I collect strictly sealed Transformers, so I know I'm the first to open them and that they haven't been next to a cat or posed outside on the grass. I got this piece because it was the only sealed one available on eBay in a long time -- AFA or not.

And yes, it's open now. :)

What did you get? I'm more curious about what the item was than caring if you opened the AFA case.

As a MISB/MOC collector myself that is pure sacrilege LOL. I cant imagine paying top dollar for sealed items, much less AFA stuff only to open it. But, collecting is all about having fun - more power to you.
