That's awesome. I feel like I have to get back to my creative pursuits... it would be a lot of effort to even get back to my former comfort levels, let alone improve, but it should be a fun journey... :)

This is inspiring work. I was super tempted by the maker bot when they revealed it, money well spent in my opinion. The time savings must be phenomenal, no waiting for parts and harder to run out of steam on a project that waiting can cause. I've been playing around a bit with 3D modelling myself for a few years and have thoughts for future projects that a 3D printer would be a godsend for. Is there much work to be done once it has printed? Sanding and such?

A fun journey is exactly what it is, it's an amazing time for creativity.

I can't think of anything that's ever given me more value for my investment.

The money savings are great vs. shapeways etc., but you are 100% correct, the TIME savings are the real value. I can test functionality immediately after designing something, get all the functional stuff right, and then worry about the detailing, definitely helps keep the creative juices flowing.

There IS a fair bit of clean up needed on the parts created using this technique, you can see in some of my pics the support material and the layering marks. Clean up isn't THAT big a task though, and I'm figuring out quicker and better techniques all the time.

    Thanks for the support!

What program do you use for the design?

I do most of my modelling in Wings, I do Boolean operations in Wings, and clean up for printing in Netfabb...plus a few other things here and there for special functions.

Update 7/4/12 (Happy Independence day to the US fans!)

    And back to work.

The slightly lower quality of the spool I bought (trying to save a few bucks) is really hurting the quality of the prints, the next roll will be official, for sure.

Anyway, made some progress on the robot mode today, head is still a big WIP, but it's coming along. More importantly though, I've sorted out how to assemble and articulate her, took a VERY old school approach, but it totally gives her the level of coy femme posing I need from her.

The thing I really enjoy about this update is that you can really see to form coming together. A d00d gets a real good sense of the aesthetic at this early stage.

Thanks! One of my top priorities with this project has been to preserve the spirit of the original artwork.

    7/4/12 Minor Update:

Put some time in with the kitty mode v.2, and finally got the hip-shoulder connections worked out to where I'm happy.

I still can't get a clean enough ball to print (I think it's entirely the fault of the cheapo ABS, I got some really clean ones from the original spool), but I did get a hip joint designed that works perfectly, and I mean PERFECTLY with a Bowei Blocks ball joint. I've got bags full of them, so that'll work just fine.

    Update 7/5

I kept playing with the settings, and a few different part orientations, and I was able to get both clean prints for the balls as well as the sockets, and so now she has COMPLETELY native hip joints

Still totally compatible with the Bowei Blocks though, which will be iconvinent as I keep working on DrillPress

She's a bit further along since the last update, but the First Aid kit has been sapping most of my time at the moment.

BUT, whatever profits I reap from the FA kit will be used to fund continued work on CatFight (along with the other photographic models for my film).

I'll try to get pics and a proper update soon, but basicaslly her v2 cat mode is almost done and I've gotten a good start on her robot form as well.

Do you happen to have any files for this? I am thinking of possibly printing it myself.
